My thinking, and I think most seem to basically agree, is that while the Cayman S is a great car all-around - it just isn't a 911. The 911 is the iconic Porsche, and that is what drew most of us to Porsche in the first place. I don't really measure my 996 against other Porsches, since all I've ever wanted - since I was about 7 years old - was a 911.

Its funny to see the same responses every time during these discussions. The conversation still ends at the same destination.

Do you plan to track the car at all? I personally know of 5 Cayman engines that had to be replaced after moderate track use while the 996 engines have proven to be a lot more durable. If you're planning to track it, go with a 996. Period. If not, you're doing the right thing by comparing the pro's and con's of both.

I just had a Cayman S as a loaner for two days while mine Cayenne was serviced.
It is a nice car but feels smaller than my 996 and the sound from the engine is way better from the 996. (depends of the mufflers of course)
I'll take the 911

I just went through the same process back in August. I came home with the 40th edition. I knew I would be sorry if I bought the Caymen. I felt the Caymen value would fall faster than a 911 and a 40 edtion 911 at that. Plus there is a lot more history on the 996 then there is on the Caymen.
Good luck.
