Default Speed Gong Light? (kinda long)

A few years ago I had an 02' that had the factory OBC option. I never used the
speed gong but I'd accidentally turn it on once in a while. I vaguely remember there was also a light that came on.

Now I have a 00' that does not have factory OBC. A previous owner turned it on so I get the temp, but I haven't added any switches yet.

I have the cluster out of the car for other reasons and was looking it over for a simple way to use the gong to extend the spoiler. It would be pretty simple to just use the gong tone but you would have to leave the gong on all the time. (no thanks) Or you could disable the speaker, but it's leads are soldered to the board and that would probably disable all the other beeps and gongs. It would be easy to solder back if you wanted because the leads are long.

So when I was looking it over I noticed there is a warning/indicator light on the far right. It's not pictured in the manual. It looks just like the cruise control light that's on the speedo gauge. There is no bulb in it.

Is that the speed gong light, and mine has no bulb because it wasn't a factory option?

Does it just indicate that the gong is active?

I can't remember from my '02. If you set a speed and then deactivate the gong, does the light light up or flash when you exceed the set speed?

If that's how it works it would be dead simple to extend the spoiler using the gong.

I looked at the manual but it didn't mention a light other than the tach display.

Couper,

I have a '02C4S and I think I can answer your questions without going out and reading the manual:

1. The "light" you are referring to when the speed limit is exceeded shows only in the speedo display and the gong sounds as well.

2. If you turn-off the speed limit OBC function, there is no gong or light in the dash display at all. Again, the only "light indicator" for speed limit exceeded is in the OBC sppedo display.

Hope this helps!!

Couper,

SOrry for the confusion in my previous post. I meant to say the tach display, not the speedo display for "speed limit" light to display when limit exceeded.

Well shucks. Thanks.

I'm gonna put a bulb in there and see if it does anything.

This is one of those silly things you want to do that seems simple, but every
time you think you've figured it out you find another wrinkle.

The ironic thing is I don't even care what speed the spoiler extends at. I put the spoiler up once in my driveway just to see if it worked. Other than that I've never even seen it extended. I can't see it while I'm driving, so I've never paid attention.

Now I'm just obsessed with finding the simplest way to do it.

Oh well, I've aways wanted a logic probe.

Um, when you look at your rear view mirror, you should be able to see the top 1/2 inch or so of the spoiler at the bottom of your rear window when deployed. I have an '03 and I can see mine. My friend has a '99 and he can see his as well.

Why not just parallel the manual spoiler switch to a switch up in the dash to manually operate the spoiler? Several here have done that. There is also a kit on ebay that has a switch and a small led that indicates the spoiler position.

Since the OBC is on, might as well add a switch to cycle through the readings on the OBC as well.

Here is the link to the manual switch in the dash.

Don, maybe you should put a phone book on the driver's seat so you can see the spoiler in the up position. That would probably help you see OVER, instead of THROUGH, the steering wheel too!

I know that it is almost impossible to see the extended spoiler in a Cab because of the hump.

I have the same car as you DFC, 00' cab. I can't see the spoiler. Although I've really never looked very hard.

I bought the spoiler switch and the LED indicator and the footwell switch. None of it is installed yet. The car is on stands for a clutch job, and has been for a while, and since I'm expecting house guests for the next week, it will probably be a week or two before I get it back together.

I bought all of that just for the novelty. That's the same reason I want to make the spoiler adjustable.

I ordered a kit for a universal relay thats activated by frequency. I know that will work, but it feels like I'm cheating.

The basic circuit board is used on different clusters. That is an alternate cruise control light and for some reason is the light used in the boxster S cluster. It has nothing to do with the speed gong function.
