What's this clunking noise?
There's some clunking noise coming from inside the engine bay, I don't know if its internal or external.. then again I don't know what it is period.
There's no loss of power in the car and it drives fine even after accelerating and letting it coast the noise lessens but when the car slows down the noise hightens again and when it idles it slowly drops its RPMs until it dies, ontop of that there's a hole in the radiator hose which i don't know would cause a problem of this clunking but would anyone have an idea of what it may be? It's a 1999 996 here's a video of the noise, sound quality is not that great though

1. could be all the stuff real close to your car in the garage.
2. maybe because you don't have shoes on
3. because you don't have pics of your Porsche
Lots of newbies introduce themselves first with pics...then the forum members offer their help.GL

Welcome to Rennlist! Barn already hit you up for pics, so I don't have to do that.
How long has it been making that noise? I am not sure what could be causing that noise but it does not sound good! Hopefully, someone else here will have some ideas.

It sounds like you could have shredded the polyrib belt if there's a hole in a coolant hose. Remove the airbox and check the belt for any frayed ends that might be flapping about. Check all of the pulleys.

Start with cleaning your idle control valve and throttlebody to correct the idle. What has the maintenence on the car been. When were the plugs last changed? Exhaust system and heat shields loose? Mobil 0W40 in the crankcase? Tool in the engine bay? Is the engine shaking more than normal at idle? Do you have a scanner?

Man that sounds bad....really bad!
Not sure what it is, video is tough to hear exact noises. Have you opened the engine up and looked in there while it's running? Try and pin point where you think its coming from. Also wrap on the exhaust parts with something while the car is NOT running and see if there is any rattle or clunking coming from any or those parts. Also could be alternator bearings, water pump, A/C or ????
In the vid, it sounds like a loose piston connecting rod, but lets all pray its not that!! Might just be exhaust CATS or something up top bouncing around...

Hey - I remember this guy from over on the Pelican air cooled forum. Worst possible place to post a video of your 996 crashing and banging around.
So, I kinda think the motor is toast judging by the sound. Did you ever check the colour of the oil or anything? If you are even a little bit mechanically inclined you need to get underneath or next to the thing and listen to where the noise is coming from. Does it sound like it's coming from *inside* the engine? If so then it's not going to be a cheap fix.
The air cooled guys kinda turn their noses up at these motors for a reason. They're fantastic when they run, but they don't *all* keep running forever unfortunately.
If you are not at all mechanically inclined, then drive it to a local indy shop and they'll tell you what's up. A lot of guys will tell you to flatbed it, but in my opinion if there's oil in it (and it doesn't look all frothy yellow) then it's either toast or it isn't. It's usually the same price to replace the motor as it is to rebuild it (still true i think) so if it lunches on the way to the shop then at least you've saved the cost of a tow and a diagnostic.
good luck.

allelsefail - turn on the motor and look underneath the furthest back of the motor on the drivers side. Look at the lowest pulley on that side.
I bet it is shaking and wobbling making the noise you are hearing.
