Choices of 2000 or newer 996 or new 1 series BMW with 4 year 50,000 mile warranty. 996 would have to pass PPI. Never had a BMW so don't know about this entry level vehicle. Just wanting a open air 3rd car (have 997 coupe-that I will keep) to drive in nice weather and probably keep for a decade or so. Your comments are appreciated.

If you're looking for a fair weather wind in your hair ride, after you've driven the Bimmer, take a ride in an '06 or newer Corvette. 400hp of low-end torque can get your blood pumping.

I haven't driven the 1 series car, but I really like the 3 series vert. Steering, brakes and handling are superb. I drove the 335xi and liked everything but the shifter - vague, rubbery and not very BMW-like. That was the only disappointment - enough to steer me back to my Audi TT. I don't love the look of the 1 series either, but that's just my taste.

I test drove a non-turbo cab when they arrived at dealers, was thinking about getting one for my wife. Also tested the Eos with the 2.0T.

Have you visited a dealer? You should be able to get a great deal, and an 135 cab with a chip would be a hoot.

 

I love my 996, but I couldn't see buying a 997 and keeping the 996. The driving differences are minimal. I would go for something different just because it was different.

 

If you've already got a 997, go with the 1-series. If you didn't have the Porsche, I'd get the 996.

 

I love BMWs...... but if its an extra car for fun I would have to say Porsche hands down.

How about a used Z4? Boxster would be a great choice also. Between a 1 series and a 996, there really isn't a comparison at all - 996 is the clear choice there, plus it's cheap.
