I just wrote an article for my local BMW CCA Chapter magazine about the 1 series. Overall it's a great car and presents a nice argument against the M3 when it comes to price for performance. There are however shortcomings to the car in terms of dynamics that need to be highlighted. The 1 series in the US does not come with an LSD and with a front engine, rear drive car, it's really a necessity to extract the performance out of a car which sports 300+ HP (talking about the 135). Also the weight is an issue, for a car that is quite a bit smaller than a normal 3 series, it's striking to me that it weights 3400 lbs. You can feel the weight transitions in the car and fighting physics is not enjoyable when really pushing it. Steering feels good and turn in is pretty quick and the car initially feels way more balanced than the 335. I have yet to drive it really aggressively on an autocross course so I'm eager to see what that's like.

Overall, the car is a very nice balance of luxury and performance. Styling of the car is subjective but I think it certainly looks better than some of the new BMWs out there now. The one thing I can't get over is the skirt arch that makes the car look like it's bent in the middle. Finally, if you're comparing it to a 996, fun factor and driving dynamics, the Porsche wins it hands down. While the 135 has good steering and ok feel the 996 trumps it in spades in terms of feedback and precision. Power is pretty much a wash as the 135 can easily keep up with older 996's. The 135's torque is almost intoxicating and can cloud your initial opinion of the car as it makes it really fun in a straight line. Will it beat it a 996 in straight line power? Probably not but a competent driver should be able to keep up without too much of an issue. Driver position is better in the 996 and so is sight lines. Brake feel is also better in the 996.

When you start throwing issues of warranty in to the mix, it's hard not to consider the 135 seriously but in the end, it's a performance 2 door sedan, not a sports car. I would drive both cars and see which fits you better. What are your goals for the car? Daily driver with some fun or dedicated weekend fun toy?
