A stick is simply just more fun to drive.

 

I am a manual guy but I spent a couple hours in a new PDK 997 and that transmission is freekin awesome.

 

Tip, despite the daily ridicule

 

Stick - ~100 less pounds, more power to the ground, and more sports car like........I think I can say this........look at my handle

 

Maybe you should have kept the Tip. At least you never did a "money shift" with it!

I gotta be honest, I never really hear this tip/stick argument in NYC or LA proper (say Santa Monica to Hollywood), except from:
a) people under the age of 22
b) people over the age of 40
c) people who don't drive at all (Manhattan, you'd be surprised)
d) people who are buying or just bought their first sports car

In other words youths, those trying to relive their youth, and other idealists.

As to my opinion, I'm a realist. I think it all depends on where you drive it and what you use the car for really. My own hubris and/or prevailing transmission availability has caused me to have driven stick daily in CENTRAL NY/LA/London/HK/Dubai/Bangalore and ocasionally in other high density cities all over Asia, Europe, and Latin America, and I am OVER it. Since I use the 911 now as my sole car in and out of Manhattan, I personally love the tip since 90% of my driving is stoplight to stoplight, and I only crack it open once in a very blue moon. Not the best use of a 911 but hey what should I do, drive an SL? I'm barely 31 for chrissake, and I'd rather the Porsche.

Now before you say hey the Porsche clutch ain't the M3/Vette/355 whatever clutch, it's easy, etc, I concede, you're right. If I had to choose a manual to drive in a true urban jungle it would be the 911, but I've had the chance to drive manual 930s, 993s, 996s, 997s and boxsters in town, and I just don't like being in and out of 1st all day. They aren't fun here, not in town, not for me anymore. And they make a transmission for markets like this, the tip! Perfect!

But these cars with manuals are a pleasure once you get out on highways or country roads! So if you are in suburban areas or spend most of your time at higher speeds, I think stick, no question really. Obviously if you track the car it's a simple choice as well (at least in the N/A cars, seems turbo tips put in some pretty good laptimes compared to the manuals). And if you keep multiple cars in the same location and consider it a weekender, obviously stick again.

I'm currently considering cocking up and doing a turbo this winter or early spring, and I will drive a couple of manual 6TTs to see if I can tool around in second most of the time with all that torque, but it seems from everything I read that an even lightly chipped turbo will fry stock clutches faster than you can say slip, so that might be a tip too (assuming that doesn't blow up too)

I still haven't had my PDK spin, but if it's anything like the DSG I'm sure it's amazing. One thing I will say about the DSG compared to the SMG or F1 trans in BMW/Ferrari is it's almost to smooth, no discernible disengagement of the driveline at all, whereas the SMG/1 type trans slaps you in and out f gear really hard. DSG feels almost like CVT, not like an auto where you have definite changes in delivery and evident weight transfer at each shift

 

He didn't have to because I rag on my Honda every chance I get!

I envy your garage. Even with (perhaps especially with) the C2 being a tip. Although I'd go for the C4 tip so I could drive it year 'round easily. In fact, I may...someday...

I'm with htny...I'm a realist. I can tell you during times when I've owned an autobox Subie with an older Porsche (like I do now) I found myself with a bigger dilema in the garage every morning than one might think...far too often it ended up with me in the Subie.

...or, maybe I'm just getting old...
