Default SmartTop installed today.

How did I ever live without this. Simple install, maybe 20 minutes and what a great product. Five seconds of programming and BING, one touch and the top goes up or down. What a pleasure when your are tying to put the top down and the light changes.

As soon as I can find a #12 Torx socket, I'll be installing the sister product, Remote Top. That might take a while cause none of the big box stores (Loews, Home Depot) carry torx sockets.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, look here for Smart Top:

and here for Remote Top:

Take care and drive safe,

What's the difference between the SmartTop and the Remote Top?

I installed the SmartTop on my 997 and it let's me open and close the top remotely via the key, as well as to do a one-touch opening and closing, and a bunch of other stuff...

Sure you didn't install the "Remote Top"? The Smart top addresses the issue of the back windows (in 996's) not being able to be controlled when the top is down and a few others. I remember when I was looking to buy it, there were enough features gained that it made sense to do both.

Maybe someone here can chime in with all the other goodies.

There is only one unit for the 997. The 996 has the 2 different units (remote and smart). I did not do the remote top as I don't want to strain the battery by activating the top without the car on.

I have RemoteTop and agree it is a great product. I decided not doing the SmartTop since my 996 (2003) can already open and close while driving at slow speeds. You are correct... 997 doesn't need both.

Re Torx sockets... go to Sears or Autozone... they carry them

But you have to hold the button and you can't operate the rear quarter windows...

yep, you are correct, but decided that spending another $300 just for those features wasn't worth it

You can operate the rear quarter windows with the top down w/o this module. Just push the lever by the rear view mirror where the top locks in so let the car think you've the top up.

Umm you miss the point. You can operate the top also by HOLDING the dang button...I don't want to have to hold the dang sensor to operate the rear windows either...doh.

I wouldn't get both the remote and the smart...one or the other.
