I was thinking about that. There's not much surface area on the jack stands or the jack points. With all the pushing and shoving with stubborn nuts I'd be worried one point would slip. And if one does, I imagine they all do at that point. I wouldn not want to be underneath the car when that happened.

Yeah, I was doing a lot of pondering over using jack stands. We gave the car progressively hard shoves to see how it would respond on the stands before starting work. Most of the shoves when working were directed downwards. While Kirk was pulling on the transmission, I kept a close eye on the stands to make sure the car wasn't moving anywhere. In the end, I noticed no movement.
I used Orient's technique of jacking up the car... found on Renntech.Org The front stands were old ones leant to me from a friend, seen in the photo. The rear stands were 6-tonne stands from Princess Auto... I think they're called Power Fist.
Edit: the clutch had 45K miles... and I'd guess the tranny is about 120-150 lbs

Congrats on the DIY there is some therapeutic benefit to doing a job like this on your own. 
FYI: I paid $1,500 for OEM parts and labor at the Porsche dealer. They charged 8 hours of labor for the job.

Congrats.
Clutch jobs with only jack stands are a PITB. I normally put jacks underneath the car just in case the car falls off the jack stands. I would be handicapped now if I had not done that. Old school method was to just shove the car wheels under the car 'just in case' but nowadays the rims are no longer steel.

Kudos...patting you on the back....If I ever need tranny work (knocking on wood), anyone in my area can feel free to come over and help me. I do have a lift, so it would be easier, and you would get carte blanche on using my lift anytime you want for life. lol. seriously.

Jon, I offer the same to all my local P-car buddies. My garage is open to all Porsche guys. I couldn't tell you how many cars have been on my lift to get work done. If you have access to a lift definitely take advantage of that!

I am lucky in that my ceiling in the garage is close to 13ft so I can have the lift as high as I want it (I store at the 2nd to last lock).
