Waving at Each Other
#31
I second that emotion.. lol!
Here are my observations:
1 Waves get more responses, high beams less so.
2 The less hair the driver has, the more likely a response.
3 Women almost never respond (see #2)
4 Men over 40 are more likely to respond (see #2)
5 The older the 911 model, the more likely a response
6 Cayenne drivers never respond (see #3)
7 You have to wave at all Boxters because by the time you figure out it's not a 911, it's already past you
8 In poor light I will sometimes wave at Mitsubishi Eclipses
9 If you see a guy in a silver Toyota mini-van wave at you, I'm having a senior moment and forgotten which car I am driving

That's me, ha.
Actually I'll try to wave or acknowledge any car I see that's cool, but especially Porsches or aircooled VWs.

I wave to other 996 guys, and 9/10 times I getta wave back, same with pre-996s. 997s on the other hand...I can't tell you how many look away, or act busy, like they don't even see you. I had a guy pull up to me at a stop sign in a 997 cab tho, and asked if my car (C2 aero) was a GT2....I tried so hard not to laugh.

Unfortunately, this long held tradition began to fade with the 996. I think it was mostly because so many of these later cars (Boxsters, 996s and 997s) are out there. Good luck getting someone in a Cayenne to respond!

We complain about Cayenne but on the other hand... I'm going to play devil (do you say that in English ?) but the cayenne is everything I can hate in a car : heavy, tall, long, large, useless, a waste of space and energy for owner's ego.
So how do you want to wave at someone who spends money in such a piece of chxxxt while he/she could be enjoying a convertible or GT3 ?!

My waves get about 1/20 response. Really really sad. Most of the time, I'm looking over, smiling and waving, and the driver has two hands at the top of the steering wheel, staring straight, and not noticing anything else on the road.
Sigh...

In Europe (where I grew up) to flash head lights means "Police with radar trap ahead",
so I would never flash lights just to say hi.
I usually do not initiate the wave,
but always wave back.

In fact, when I do get a wave now, it takes me off guard (and I hurriedly wave back so the other guy does not feel dissed).
