Default Trackday - White Smoke

So I did my first trackday today - AWESOME. LOVED IT. Not quite as fast as on my bike, but awesome nonetheless.

However, in between sessions the exhaust would blow a noticeable amount of smoke for about 5 seconds. The car ran great, but the smoke thing got me worried.

A couple of the guys there said it may be because i shut the car right off after coming off the track, and a couple others suggested I may have overfilled the car w/ oil.

Anyone else experience this? Doing a search didn't yield any results that could account for this situation - restarts after hard driving for 25 minutes...

I got home about 30 minutes ago and just tried to start the car - everything seems fine, no smoke...

If you overfillled and it burns oil wouldn't the smoke be blueish?

Don't worry, they all do that. Not enough oil and you'll have the pump sucking air and oil pressure drop. Too much oil and it puffs on restart. You're better off running more oil and puffing then run out of oil at the apex. I just ordered the X51 pan and hope it will fix the problem.

I have the same issue with my 911, the problem is the oil separator. Porsche sells a high performance one that is 3 times bigger and solves the issue..

I suggest you let the car idle for a few minutes, then shut it off. This tip given to me by the Service Mgr at Pfaff Porsche to avoid smoke. He also said it isn't anything to worry about.

You can get an X51 oil pan from http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/me...ry_Code=996Oil for $240.

I asked this on a previous thread and didn't get an answer: have any 996 rennlisters actually installed this oil separator and tried it on the track? I'm probably going to do it, but wanted to hear from someone with first hand experience.

To the OP, I also experience exactly what you're talking about and have been assured by my indy and local dealer that it's normal.

This is correct. I have an X51 engine, and if I shut it off immediately after entering the pits, it will smoke upon restart. So I just let it idle for a few minutes before shutting off, and it doesn't smoke.

I have not installed the race oil separator, but if you check on the cayman forums you can find info on people who have installed it and tested it, it seems to work

I make a habit of letting my car idle for a while after I come to a stop. I've never seen smoke, but my old boxsters would smoke like crazy if I shut them right off after hard use. I've heard the smoking is because of the horizontal orientation of the cylinders (which does no permit excess oil to drain out as readily as cars with "v" or "inline" cylider orientations).
