Default P-car Crash - I hydroplaned off highway

Hi all. Good news: the engine on my '99 is not blown.

On the other hand, I wrecked pretty hard. Rainy highway, downhill curve, hydroplane started, I lifted, I spun, I crashed. I feel worse than the car looks, but I'll heal up fine. No one else hurt.

Insurance discussions to come. Anyone have any thoughts about how/when/if the mechanical damage comes to light? I mean, the body guys are good with paint and panels, but who checks on the running gear? I'm assuming the insurance adjuster won't. If anyone has experience, I'd love to hear it.

BTW, both airbags fired and the pop-up roll hoops deployed (I almost rolled). Oh, and airbag burns suck.

You walked away - always a good sign. Cars can be replaced/repaired (although not something we want to do).

Glad you're alright.

What was the speed when the car into hydroplane?

I wonder if having a 4WD would have helped in this situation...

Depending on how fast he was going.

Certainly AWD would increase the limit before losing control... but it can't defy physics.

CP, glad you're okay!

Wet conditions throw all the normal grip rules out the window, especially on roads that we know.
Had a friend drive his 3 series off his regular freeway on-ramp because of sprinklers!

Don't know about the damage, but I've seen cars totalled for less visible damage.

Good luck and good recovery.

CP,
My car was damaged in a similar manner, and the body shop did all work with the exception of alignment; they took it over to Hennessy Porsche for that.
The body shop gets together with the insurance adjuster, they do an initial estimate, you get the check for that, and then they start work on the car. Then they do a "supplement", once all damage is uncovered/determined.
FWIW, on my car, the initial payment was ~$6000, the supplement was ~$5900. The body shop warranted all the mechanical repairs just as if Porsche had done them.

Eric - you called it. There are a lot of cars. My sons only have one dad.

JJB236 - As I told the Trooper, 60-65. He felt the road conditions were to blame b/c there have been so many wipe-outs in that exact same spot.

Dave - thanks for the good wishes. I'll be fine. Just sore and embarrassed.

Kevin - that does look similar. And your new blue paint is gorgeous. If they rebuild me, maybe it'll be fine. Still, I was hoping for a check and a car-crusher.

HT - thanks; I'm on the mend.

Yeah, the thread on them looked pretty fresh. I guess you were just at the wrong place at the right time. The only problem will be the separation emotions you'll have while the body shop jerks you around for the next month or so.
