Default What's the point of CAI-type intakes in a 996?

Given that the stock 996 airbox guides air from the outside into the filter, what's the point of those K&N-style intake systems? All it seems to do is draw hot air right from the engine compartment, instead of the colder outside. Does it bring *any* performance benefits to have those conical air filters?

I have the EVO cold air induction system. I do not know if it provides the claimed horsepower gains. I do know that when combined with a nice aftermarket exhaust, the sound it makes under acceleration is absolutely incredible.

I did it only because of the sound, I have the Fabspeed that actually keeps the original air box..

You know when you were a kid and you'd put a playing card or piece of cardboard on the fork of your bicycle so it hits the spokes when it's rolling? Yeah, it's like that.

I also have the EVO intake. You'll find a ton of believers and detractors on Rennlist. I did not dyno my car, but I would guess it does produce a touch more power and could produce even more if paired with a chip (GIAC makes a chip specifically tuned to the EVO intake). Most of the Grand Am Cup teams that used to race the 996 (they have now moved on to the 997) used this intake, so I'd bet there is something to it.

IMHO it's worth it for the sound alone (paired with PSE it is intoxicating).

I have the evo intake, what really gets me.
Is that one of the clamps the one that attaches to the maf tube always comes lose from the rubber. I have to check the clamp every time I use the car to ensure air is not being sucked in though the gap it leaves if the clamp is lose.

Default heh

time and time again, it's been shown that the CAI intake is not superior to the stock ones in a VW, an Audi or for that matter, Porsche. If there was that much HP being left on the table, do you really think Porsche would leave that bit alone? It's the cheapest way.

I wonder why almost every 996 GAC racing team used the Evo Intake?

Probably didn't test them and just bought into all the hype huh....

I need to find a longer rubber piece, the fitment of the one that came with the evo cai is too short.

That's not all of the documented improvement brought about by the intakes. I like the way it adds a new color (orange) to the engine bay. Sort of like adding parsley to a pasta dish. There you have it: sound AND color!

I'd get one just for the sound. If it adds 1hp or 2, then that's a bonus.

In Feb. 05, there was a car featured in "Excellence" magazine. It was the "Jet Blue Clubsport" 996, built by 9ff. They increased the output of the 3.4 engine to a claimed 337 hp, through some pretty extensive modifications (requiring removal of the engine). Those modifications included a different air intake system. If my memory serves me correctly, they used a BMC (GT3 cup car style) conical air filter. I don't believe every aftermarket part manufacturer's horsepower claims. 9ff does have a little bit of credibility, since they set the world production car speed record in a narrow bodied 996.
Here is a link to the Jet Blue 996...http://www.autosportengineering.com/9ff/jet_blue.htm
