Hey all.
For those who have had recent experience either buying or selling a 996 Targa, I'd appreciate your sense of current market values. I am considering trading or selling my 03 Targa with 50k miles. Great color combo, many options (full leather, deviating blue stitch, Bose, etc.), and some upgrades (PSS9's, Fabspeed muffler, etc.).
What would you guess this car should pull in the open market or as a trade at my friendly neighborhood Porsche dealer? Thanks, in advance.

Really depends on the condition of the car, options and locations. Average private party sales price for a car in excellent condition would be around $45K. Trade-in value would be around $40K.
Good luck

Thanks, all. SBD, i sure hope you're wrong. Maybe I'll keep on the BBS rims and aim a little higher. The one dealer I talked with about a trade offered some crazy low amount.

Jason:
I am leaving on Friday to go to Houston and pick up my 2004 Targa (6 speed) with 24K miles. I bought it from a Mercedes dealer for $31,750. It is a single owner car.
The car is fairly fully optioned, but I don't know all of them. The original sticker is in the car. Base price was $66,000, and it sold for $94,000 new. Full leather, rosewood, heated seats, Dark Teal metallic with Savannah interior. Not sure of the rest.

If it's a 6 speed I think you'll be able to get a decent price if you're patient and sell it yourself. It seems that most of the Targas I've seen are tips, and I know from experience it is very difficult to sell a 996 tip no matter what condition. Decent of course the relative term. I would agree that mid 30s would be a good price for you to shoot for. I was looking for a 6 speed Targa last year when I sold my Tip and never found the right car. I ended up buying an E46 M3. I spent the he rest of the money I had set aside, and then some, paying for a Jake Raby engine in my Boxster. I doubt either of the pcar dealers in Atlanta will give you a decent price unless maybe you're one of their regular new car buyers.

NADA, the most widely respected an accurate source for those in the trade, lists
Retail 33,950
Clean trade 28125
Ave trade 25850
Now, dealers like to be able to sell well below Rtl and still make good profit. They like to buy at back of stated trade values. They will almost never offer trade values except for a very rare or mint very low mileage example.

With all due respect to the other posters, these prices seem low. I just finished a 4-month search for a 996, and I have to tell you, the only cars under $35K were 1999 and 2000, straight 911s, that could be had for a real steal. A "nice" 911 post 2002 was in the $35K to $50K range, definitely on the higher side if it was a true peach (low owners, not a lease).
The biggest factor right now is that all cars are cheap, and that drives the prices down for everything. It's just like real estate - people look at what else is available when they formulate their price. Forget what you paid for it, the market price is what someone will pay now - and unfortunately, Americans can't afford much right now.

I must have lucked out on my girl, she's a 2003 and I got her for $32k 2 years ago. She had been sitting in a dealers front court and he couldn't shift it. He started at $42k, I offered $32 cash and he jumped at it. Makes me wonder what he originally paid for it as it was a lease car before.
Will never sell it, just add it to the collection.
