Default Updated - Clutch change** pics** - non 996

Due to the snail moving traffic on the 911 and 911 Turbo forums, I decided to post my pics of my clutch change here. I created my "handle" from owning a tiptronic 996 and now have moved back into a manual, well an older manual......also with a turbo on it.

My car was slipping the clutch under higher boost and it was time to change it out. I bought a 600 ft/lb clamping PP utilizing a Kevlar disk. Well, after opening her up, I discovered the FW was trash, d@mn it, more $$$$$$$. Anyways, here ya go:

1.Intercooler off and all lines, hoses, and plugs disconnected
2.Porsche approved engine cradle, hahahaha

9 Shot of the new and the old. The 6- puck is just too abrasive for the street, it literally milled the PP and flywheels surfaces to about an 1/8 of an inch. No exaggerating!!
10 Look at the huge lip on the PP surface to the left

That's a bad *** looking motor even though it's air cooled
How long did the clutch last you?
How long did it take you to get to it/replace it?
Don't forget about your toe protection, safety first I can tell you’re in a serious mission but no beer cans in your pics?
I can't imagine taking on that project on my own, for many good reasons, skill being at the top of the list.
I'm damn near maxed out with side marker removal.
Nice work!

Clutch lasted I believe around 30k miles. The 6-puck literally milled the PP and FW surfaces from street use until the PP simply lost clamping force.

It took me 5 hrs to get to the end, but I was taking my time due to never doing this before on this particular car and taking pics here and there.

Glad you took your time and took the pics.
It is my understanding that 20-40K is about right for a 996, looks to be the same for other 911's
GL on getting her back to normal

Impressive and Good job Tippy, nice pics too. This is when it's nice to have a portable jet sprayer to clean up engine/tranny and don't forget to check the rubber lines/clutch throw out bearing etc for future problems. Keep up the great work. I can truely call you a gear head now.

Yea, my Father has a pressure washer and it would be nice, I will just use some degreaser and some elbow grease.

I had to replace a fuel hose running to the fuel press. reg. that was cracked in about 10 places due to the installer making a too tight of a bend. Thank goodness I saw this now, could of been meltdown. I used push-lok hose, good stuff.

I have installed a new throwout bearing installed on the PP. What a PITA!!! I had to use a drill press (used as a hydraulic press) to overcome the spring washer and install the snap ring, my Bro helped on that one. I have pics somewhere of that.

Degressor and starter fluid (no residue) works wonders. Some of the older Throw out bearings where a pain, but built well.. compared the the 996 which seems alittle chessy to me and qwik to wear out. I have never heard of push lock hose can you explain.

Push-lock hose is a hose that does not require a hose clamp. You simply push it on a Push-lock special barbed fitting and it holds tight. Of course, if you do not have the special Push-lock barbs, you use a hose clamp as I did.

Also, the hose is very chemical resistant and fuel safe.

If you posted this to regain some RL street cred after driving a Tiptronic for so long, well...job well done! Looks like quite the undertaking--one of the clinchers for me when buying my 996 was finding out that the clutch was replaced at the same time the engine was replaced, i.e. 50 miles before I purchased it.

Thanks for sharing...
