Default Engine Swap Questions

Hi there, I posted a while ago about some problems with my car. Anyways, I gave it to the dealer and I get the diagnosis tomorrow but replacing the engine might be neccessary.

I have a '99 3.4 Tip. Can I put in only another 3.4 or can I put in a 3.6 too?

How much should I spend/where should I buy?

Does it matter if it's a tip or manual?

I have done engine swaps on 993's in the past, is the 996 more difficult?

Does your car have e-gas?

Anything other than a mechanical throttle 3.4 will involve throttle pedal sensor, wiring, and DME changes, which will be more complex in the case of a 3.6.

+1

bmartini, it is far from impossible but this does complicate the swap. There are several threads on Renntech about this (IIRC).

I asked about this with my new engine. It was not cost effective due to many parts needing to be updated along with the new engine. IIRC, this includes new control computer(s) which were pretty expensive. I didn't ask about any physical modifications that needed to take place to "merge" the new engine into my car. If you go that route, please keep us informed!

Good luck,

-td

search for posts by Paul 996. He recently put a 3.6 in his '99 non e-gas car and outlined a bunch of the necessary updates required. IIRC he used the stock computer with a 3.6 flash and a stand alone controller for the Variocam control...but otherwise I believe his is a cable throttle 3.6 now.

nah, my interest is purely financial. i found a 3.6 at a good price but if the 3.4 is easier to swap than that is that. i am doing the labor myself, i don't want more work than necessary.

still haven't heard back from the dealership after two days... deep down i still have a little hope that the problem is something repairable, but i think my motor is toast.

it's a metal on metal tapping sound, like nails on a chalk board to a pcar owner....

oh well, so far, i am checking out pelican and ebay. any other good places?

Wasn't more fun when any engine from GM, Ford, or Mopar with fit in any of their cars with minimal mods. Motor mounts, a bigger radiator, maybe a few different pulleys and belts and you were good to go. Even if you needed to swap out the tranny, it was a bolt in and way less expensive then an new ECU
