the 996 got me in trouble

Wow! Great comments from taylorsnutrition. Why? Because I've always wanted to know how Porsches look from a cop's POV. Also, I'm in my Charlotte for business all the time - in my Ford Explorer fleet car. I hope I get to meet ya at Parade - only 5 more days to registration!

BruceP, I agree, it's not "reckless driving" (in the vehicular code) but simply speeding. However, it might have been considered "reckless" (not vehicular code) by the other poster.
This horse dead yet?

Where I live, it gets your car impounded on the spot, at the roadside. Your ride goes away on a hook, and the charge is automatically for 'racing', even if you were the only car on the road. You can get your car back in a week, but good luck insuring it afterwards.

I've been out of town, so I haven't been keeping up with all the responses, but let me say a couple of things:
1) I was NOT being reckless in Santa Monica. I was in the left lane and was completely in control of the car. Seemed like I was sitting still, actually, even though the speedo said 50+. San Vicente is a residential street but constructed like a mini-parkway, with a wide median strip, etc.
2) The officer was entirely polite and professional. Just doing his job, and doing it very well. No grudges there.
3) Four days later, on the I-5 on the way up to San Francisco, I got ***yet another*** ticket for 91 in a 75. Going 91 on the I-5 in a Porsche is like going 250 in a Learjet. (I came back in the dead of night: not a single patrol car to be seen.) I think I've gotta get a Valentine.

Passport 8500 and clean in the past 3 years (knock on wood). At minimum it will pop and give you a warning to oncoming and traps. Laser pops about once a month, mostly on freeways. I'm hard on the brakes, only get scowled at by our friendly officers.
And don't preach at me...it's a porsche, I'm always a little over.

you guys and your V1 v. Passport/Escort debates... is like debating whether to go silver badge or black carrera badge on your 911.
waste of time. neither one lets you blast down the I-5 at 95mph thinking you're untouchable. instant on laser, baby.

Spot on agreed. It's the instant on that always gets you, especially on a lonely highway.

Certainly a factor - on the way up 5 to Irvine this morning, the cop sitting on the hard shoulder lets tons of traffic by, never moves, until I pass him surrounded by traffic, all doing 75.
He starts up, and then plays the 'shadow from the slow lane' game with me for 3-4 miles...
Of course I could just be paranoid - but I've had them zoom up to my bumper before now and sit there for 5 mins, like they are waiting for me to do something stupid - then they pull away when I won't oblige.

Forgive my nOObness, but is that hair-dryer-shaped gun a laser or radar? The cop was holding one of those devices and showed me the reading. Is there no antidote for laser? Any advice appreciated before I spend $$$ for a V1 or equivalent.
