I wouldn't choose to walk or jog near a divided street that 35 vs. 53 mph is the difference between "safe" and "reckless". YMMV.

If you lived in West LA/Santa Monica, you would understand.

You're splitting hair. At which point is "reckless" considered "really reckless." I'm not trying to be righteous here... as I've received a ticket for going 42 on a 35 before.

I am very calm . In fact I'm not shouting by using all caps in my posts. It sounds like you know the road in question very well. As previously stated, I do not.

Based on the info given would you be comfortable writing a ticket for reckless driving (pretend you are the leo)? That is the term I questioned, and I think it is a fair question.

If you want to try to get our of the ticket, check with the traffic court for a traffic survey of that stretch or road. They must have a survey less than five years old showing the 85th percentile speed. If this speed is more than 35mph, your citation should be dismissed at trial.

If you don't have any info how could you possibly determine that his behavior was or was not reckless?

I'd feel more comfortable jogging on a road and see a 996 doing 53mph instead of 35 than meeting a soccer mom with her cell phone in one hand and turning back to shout at her kids, doing 33mph. But I guess that's just me.

Catching "criminals" on the street is so much easier for the police than to get them commiting other crimes.

Let's not turn an "18-over speeding ticket" into "reckless driving". One of this country's problems seems to be losing perspective on simple things like this; that's why we can't smoke in bars in half the states any more.

totally dude. going 53 v. 35 ain't too crazy of a diff... i saw people driving that fast all day in santa mon, melrose etc etc etc this weekend. let's not suddenly become traffic arbiters when we weren't even there in the first place. the dude got a damn ticket claiming tongue in cheek that his 911 got him in trouble... yet somehow we end up in a fuqin argument.

WHAHAHAHH

What a tit.

53 mph in a 996 is not reckless anywhere except maybe in a primary school parking lot!

Those were my thoughts exactly. I would much rather mistakenly jog into the path of a 996 traveling at 53mph than find myself in front of a rusting 1990 Ford F350 traveling at 35 mph while carrying a full load of lumber or concrete blocks. The driver of the 996 would have a better chance of stopping, or going around you, than the truck.

It is very easy to drive around at 35 mph in a 996 in second or third rear and inadvertently increase your speed to 50+ mph. Anyone who says they don’t regularly, or at least occasionally, do this is either lying or spending too much time observing your speedo., which may be reckless in and of itself.

I know how you feel, don't worry the hurt will go away but you will realize that enforcement works the next time you feel the urge and don't hit it quite so hard. I got it on a long straight country road on a beautiful crisp sunny spring day, just got my car back with the ROW030 installed and had to see how it felt at speed, he came opposite direction over a little dip, got me for 70 or so in a 55, had he been a minute or so earlier he would have got me at 112- small consolation.

What everyone must understand is that Santa Monica has a low crime rate and a lot of just out of high school police officers that need to flex their force. Go about 4 miles south to Venice, and this won't happen as much because of real crime that the police are out fighting.

Looks like you've been nailed by Santa Monica's Finest. Just be careful, the crosswalk scam they have going there is their big money maker. I've been pulled over for it twice in the last year. Even if the road is 6 lanes wide, the pedestrian has to be completely across the intersection and on the curb before you can go. I even lost it in written declaration.

The worst part of getting a speeding ticket is the thought of getting the second one.

Anyone else ever get 2 in 1 day?
