Default So I think I may have lost my only Key....

Any idea of the steps and cost involved in getting a new key cut and programmed? Thanks in advance.

you will need to go to a Porsche dealer and show them proof that you own the car. They can order you a new key with the VIN. I assume you only have one key.
If you have an extra key, then you can check around for someone who could cut one for you, buy a remote from a dealer or whoever, and then have a dealer or independent program it for you.

With any car that has electronic remotes, you should always have two keys, and know where the spare one is.

Your dealer will sort this out for you, this depends on which country you are in.

Could I order a blank key from ebay and have a locksmith or the stealer cut it with the VIN code? I know I will have to have the key programmed by the dealer but I wouldnt mind saving a few dollars.

I have heard this is bad. As in really expensive. let us know if you are able to order a key from Germany or if you have to get a new door lock / ignition.

To order the key, I think you have to order a blank and have the dealer cut it for you using the vin # and faxing proof or ownership. I believe the cost for the blank key and cutting is not too bad. Then you need to order the remote with 24 digit program code. Bring the car to a dealer near you and have the dealer program the 24 digit code of your new remote to your car.
Try Sunset Porsche for your parts. I got my remote for around $100, you can also order a key from them. The dealers to program the remote is usually around $150 depending on where you go. Hope this helps.

I found a blank key/remote head on ebay that looks exactly like the missing key. I am thinking I can have that key cut and reprogrammed at the stealer. Should work right?

The blank could be cut be the dealer with your vin #. The remote head will work only if it comes with the 24 digit id tag. Without the id tag, the remote head is useless piece of souvenir. Thats why there is a discrepency in price on ebay.

You can only use the key head if it has the program # on it. it should have a white tag attached to it.
I would steer away from any used Ebay keys.

again, i would not get blank key from ebay, too many things could go wrong, not to mention that one you are looking at doesn't have the "white tag", meaing you can't program the remote.
if you just want to get a key, not the remote. call Sunset Parts Toll Free 1.800.346.0182
Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.(Pacific Time)
ask them to cut a key for you without remote. they need you fax your paperwork to them.

I ordered a key from ebay once....and it didn't work. The dealer got me 2 new keys including coding for 450 bucks. I still had one key...don't know if it is much more expensive if you don't have any keys.

Local dealer told me they have to have the key sent in from Germany! I will be calling Suncoast later today. Thanks for the advice.

Current (as of today) situation from our Porsche parts dealer is that keys are cut to order at Porsche USA, approximate turn-round time is 48 hours, then the alarm heads (and you will be buying new ones, won't you?) can be programed.

Big lesson time, owning a $30K and upwards car and only having one key is not a good idea.

get a key with a TAG, no TAG, its useless, go to dealer, no other place, its not worth the headache and also, you will pay $$$ out the butt. Key, cut, program, etc... should be around $300 at US dealer. Good luck!
