Default Funky Gas Gauge Trick

OK so I am driving my 99 996 today. All of a sudden my gas gauge goes from 1/2 to empty, instantly. The low gas light starts to flash on and off. With in 30 seconds it returns to normal...... About 20 min later it does the same thing....

Do you all think that its a short some where or is it my cars way of telling me that some thing is wrong with my car......

Loose connection between the sender and the instrument cluster, or a problem with the sender itself.

Buy a new sending unit and install it yourself. My unit did the same thing and then it finally stuck at 3/4 or something. I could figure out why the car would not start. I made the mistake of thinking I had a major issue and the dealer sent a flat bed from 120 miles away only to find out it was the sending unit and I was merely out of gas. Pretty simple repair I would have done myself and saved a lot of cash.

Maybe just a loose nut in front of the steering wheel.

Rob, you have the correct part but the wrong location. When this happened to my car, one of the lug bolts on my engine lid was loose. As soon as I snugged it up, problem gone! You may recall I installed these to tie a string between them so I could get my replacement Carrera logo on straight.

They are lug bolts, right? So I torque them at 96 ft. pounds. I certainly don't want my deck lid flying off on the highway!
