Oil Recommendation? Please be kind!
I'm planning on my first oil change for my 02 C4S, got the filters from Suncoast and getting ready to purchase the oil.
Open my owner's manual and see reference to recommended weights of >50 degrees: 10w40, 15w40, 15w50 and <50 degrees: 10w40, 10w30, 5w30.
I do a search and ohmygosh!!!! Seems like everyone is talking about 0w40 or 5w40 as the "recommended" oil. Surely the rating system has changed? Has Porsche recommendation changed since my manual was published?
I'm really confused??? I wanted to stay with the official recommendation but now not sure what that is.
Without starting a holy war, can someone clarify my confusion.

However, unless I am mistaken, I think original poster was more concerned about the proper weight of oil to use.

Sounds like 0W40 it is.
But my original question was relating to what's listed in the owner's manual vs what's shown on the new TSB's and such. Looking at the owner's manual I had decided to give 10w40 a try as it seemed to be a full season oil for the NC area.
I assume from looking at these later TSB's that Porsche simply changed their recommendation.

Yup. My policy on this stuff is to take whatever Porsche's current advice is. In the highly unlikely event that this advice causes me a problem, I've got someone rich, accountable and accessible to blame. Anonymous dudes on the internet possess none of the foregoing qualities.

Just call the dealership. I just changed mine with 0-40

Interesting that 10W40 is not even on the recommended list. So I guess I will also go with either 0W40 or 5w40 (whichever is better for all-season use).

Maybe the 1st thread everyone should be directed to upon accessing Rennlist is the "which oil" thread
Believe me, I'm not flaming anyone! This was the 1st question I asked and my intro to rennlist.
So one of those threads is mine

The most CURRENT TSB is the one you should always follow. Why? Technology changes, R&D changes, etc, etc, etc..
Your manual may have stated 10W-40 and 15W-50 but since then the APPROVED oils have changed (see rationale in my first sentence).
0W-40, 5W-40, and 5W-50 and the ONLY oils approved by PCNA for our cars. If you are running your car on the track in Vegas during the summer, then it makes sense to run 15W-50 but not out here in NC (or just about anywhere else).
You've already opened up a can of worms by posting this thread and should have known better from doing a search. FYI....rec'd should not be in quotes as you stated. It is in fact NOT rec'd, rather APPROVED and ONLY the ones approved for your car.
Just b/c your manual says something doesn't mean it is written in stone. As research becomes more and more sharp and acute, the list will get tweaked. Just the basic underlying premise of research......improving upon past research.

They went to 0W40 to save a few $M down the road in US fines - everyone knows that!
