Default 100,000 miles today 10/14/07 - long term report

Crossed the 100,000 mile mark today. I thought I would list the parts I have replaced for anyone seeking to buy a 996 and are trying to understand any problem areas and to give a general report. I have owned this car over 2 years and have spent less than $1000 on parts that have broke.

General condition:
-Still on the original RMS but it does seep.
-Engine burns less than a half-a-quart of oil in 10,000 miles.
-Carpet is in perfect condition.
-Seats are supple and have one tiny tear, otherwise very good condition.
-Only wear that is visible is all the tiny scuffs on the painted plastic interior pieces. The rest of the car looks like it is in very good condition.

Parts replaced:
-Oil separator (around 85,000 miles) $125 and 9 hrs of work
-Two pulleys; 1 tensioner, 1 idler (around 97,000 miles) $140 and 30-45 * *minutes of work
-Bowden system/window reg. (around 98,000 miles) $230 and 2 hours of work
-Water pump (99,950 miles) $141 reman from NAPA, 2 hrs of work cussin' and bustin' knuckles using 2 pry bars on the engine plate to gain clearance.

Parts need replacing:
-Both 02 sensors (scanned at Autozone)
-Window washer fluid tank (cracked)
-Ignition assembly (the tumbler in the assyy spun in circles one night but has never gave me problems since)
-Transmission bushing (sloppy between forward/reverse)
-Suspension (it is crashing on compression now)

How is this possible? The 996 usually explodes around 80,000 miles, I call bull****.

And I offer my hearty congratulations. I ALWAYS like to see guys post when their 996's hit the big miles. There's just too much negativity about all the things that go wrong. These are great cars and are capable of going the distance. It's a tribute to your maintainence and overall care of the car.

Riad.....you still calling BS? Oh ye of little faith. I would have bought another 996, but I've been chasing the TT for some time now. The 99 still has a much more nimble and quick-on-its-feet feeling compared to the TT. They're great little cars.

Congratulations. That's farther than most aircooled engine go befoe they need some kind of major service.

My 2002 is halfway there. At my current annual mileage rate (25K kilometers per year) I'll bet there in just over three years. Same schedule as you I guess.

So far so good. Enjoying every mile and still making excuses to go for even a short drive.

I don't believe it! Did you buy this Porsche new?? I think the former owner did all the repairs: new engine (or 2-3) new RMS (or 4) new interior after engine fire etc......
I am at 72K and I don't think mine is going to last much longer! the following problems are making me believe I got about 50 miles left:

little crack in windshield
problems in closing my cab-top (right side wire is broken)
the digit before last in my odometer has a tiny leak

BUT ABOVE ALL:
there is a symbol in the odometer telling me that I have about 50 miles to go before I run out of gas!!

Congrats with the 100K anniversary......another 100K is unlikely but not impossible!!

Good job you are a DIY owner Tippy! Long Live the Tip!

My 02 C4S just made 83k yesterday! I'm breathing right behind your neck......
Previous original owner's dealer-only records show no major repairs whatsoever.
I've had it over a year.....
1. Replaced a busted coolant hose - 78000 miles - $270+
2. Replaced the alternator - 81300 miles - $500+
3. Replaced the ignition switch - 82000 miles - $20+ (DIY)

Just last month, I thought I needed an Air/Oil Separator ($900),
but the white smoke seems to be only at startups, zero smoke within a few seconds,
and none during hard acceleration or driving after that.
So I'm hoping all is fine for now...

NOT BAD! With such a SHORT list, I'm sure it's hard to find other cars to compare to, EVEN 993's!
