Unhappy Disaster Act II -- Advice on car insurance...

Hi All,

To think my troubles have ended. I am still dealing with the Porsche dealer on rip-off work they performed. Alas, that turned out to be the least of my problems. After I got the car back from the shop the first time, it died on the way back. I managed to pull into my garage before it died completely. The following day, I had to get my car towed back to the dealer.

My work doesn't allow for almost any time off, let alone for auto troubles. So my brother was helping me get the car out of the garage so the tow truck can take it. What happened, was.... unthinkable. As he was pushing it out, it started rolling. He jumped in, but not in time for the door to get caught on the garage side. The glass got shattered, the door is damaged (body shop's saying it has to be replaced).

He is not insured. I am insured collision/comprehensive with a 1000 deductible. Damage is estimated in thousands. I've never had to deal with something like this. Am I sh*t out of luck? Would the insurance company handle a claim like this?

(destroying my bro isn't going to help either as he's neither in the place to pay for this nor has insurance)

That is a drag, sorry for the issues! Not too familiar with insurance coverages, but I would think they would cover! Good Luck!

Sorry to hear of your accident and someone mentioned this before...it was an accident. Your collision coverage will cover the loss less your deductible...maybe your bro can pick this as his contribution. Homeowners will not respond...comprehensive coverage is for fire, theft, vandalism, animals and floods...Hope this helps.

I (ahem) did a similar thing some years ago - not to a Porsche, but an Escort wagon. Left it running in the driveway while I ran in the house for something I had forgotten. I thought I had set the parking brake, but when I looked out the living room window and saw the Escort rolling backwards down the driveway, well, I realized I hadn't pulled the handle hard enough. The driver's door was open. It clipped a tree on the way down (crunch), and the car came to rest with the rear bumper against another tree. Did my insurance cover it? Sure. It was embarrassing as hell to file the claim, but they paid. Does it matter who was "driving?" I doubt it - not if your brother is over 25 and has a driver's license.

Your insurance should certainly cover it, but check w/ them to see if your rates will rise as a direct result of this claim. You can then decide which path to follow based on total cost of the incident.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been there and done that. Narrow garage space in college; dead battery; started to push it out and it rolled; went to jump inside to hit the brakes, but the door caught on the door jamb. Ouch!!

If you have a popular color, check salvage yards for a replacement door- it might be cheaper than the insurance thing. Good luck, but **** does happen- that's why you carry insurance.
