The M3 is very quick off the line, but the 996 has the advantage as speeds rise.

Yes and no. The weight distribution is good. However the 996 suffers from pretty bad axle tramp off the line.
The 997 gets off the line much better than the 996. The e46 M3 also launches a little better than the 996.

The E46 has a 4.23 first gear vs. the 3.80 of the 996, has a lot to do with the better launch. Both diff gears are close to the same ratio.

A stock 996 is a pretty underpowered drag car. Now the track (road course), that's a different story.

I missed 3rd but still trapped at 107mph back in '05. I haven't been to the track since.
I am curious to find out what is the trap speed is on C2s and C4s. I have a 99 C4 and also an E46M3.
A couple of days ago, I was coming back from dinner with a couple of extra people on the M3. We encountered a fellow P owner and we played a bit. I thought he would pull on me hard specially after 60mph and considering I had an extra 300-400 lbs of weight than he did (in addition to the weight difference).
To my surprise, all the way to 130 or so I actually gained on him a bit.
What is the trap speeds on C2's? His car seemed to be an 01-02...had some ver nice HRE's and had the factory aero kit on. Very nice blue with a 911 badge on the back and a PSE from what I could tell.
I am by no means saying the M3 is a faster car, but it could be. I am just curious about what the trap speeds are STOCK on our 996's vs. an E46M3...thanks!!

This is something I would like to know to. I've encountered several M3's and I've never outran anyone of them with my ~280 hp. What would happend in every occation is I would pull away with about a cars legnth or maybe a little more but then the M3's would gain and finally when over 200km/h they pass.

I have no idea what my trap speed is, but my X51-equipped '04 is considerably faster - off the line, at highway speeds, and in every other way - than my previous car, an '04 E46 M3. Not really close (more power & torque and 400-500 pounds lighter).
The cars are probably pretty close with the standard 3.6, though.

Seriously, I think it's more fun when I know someone wants to race at a light to rev the motor up really loudly and then when the green hits, don't move for about 3 seconds and then creep away from the light as sloooooow as possible. It just makes me laugh to see people who want to drag race me in my 911 and, in the long run, my clutch will last much longer.

yea i rarely if ever drag race, but would gladly romp from a roll or a hwy dig from 3rd given that i feel the other dude is in control of his ego and ride. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
the only time i've "raced" my car is against a lightly modified E39 M5. it was even steven up to 110mph or so from say 65mph.

True, I am talking of Muscle cars, they have to much torque with little traction. I kill them all the time in first gear, then I let off because I know what will happen afterwards.
