Default oil pressure

I have searched and searched and really can't find an answer to these questions.

1. Our 996's have an oil pressure gauge from 0 to 5.
2. Does anyone know what we should show for idle and how exactly does this gauge work? I mean, I know how it works (more pressure, less pressure)...but, say at 70mph on 6th gear...ideally, how much pressure should we see? How much pressure should we see at WOT...? Does it matter what kind of gear we are in or anything of that nature?

Does each marking have an equivalent to bars or to lbs of pressure...etc...?

Today, I have noticed that pressure is always oscilating between 4 and 5...depending on the speed and how much gas I apply..and even after I release throttle, the pressure is still pretty high. I idle and really low speeds, the marking is at 3...but it never drops below that.

Can anyone share some information on how this little gauge works and what exactly is it that it measures and how?

Thanks!!

Cold engine all engine speeds: 5 bar
Warm engine idle: 1.5 - 2 bar+
Any engine speed above 3,000: 4 bar+

So each bar, is in fact "a bar" meaning...15 lbs or so per "each bar...?

I think my pressure is a bit high at idle...what would cause this?

What oil viscosity and weight are you using...that could be the reason for your higher readings

I appreciate the feedback everyone...I have Imagine Auto do the oil changes so I usually let them put whatever it is Porsche recommends. I know I should "know" that, but I don't.

I need to get an oil change next month...what is everyone running on their 99' C4's?

In South Texas, my oil pressure can be as low as 0.7-0.8 Bar at idle in 90+ heat. The engine idles @ 600RPM normally.

Yes, each bar represents 14.7 PSI or round up to 15 PSI.

Thanks...some of the logos are hard to identify but I can tell you all of them if need be

There are bands called Bile and Vile already in fact I have seen Vile already. But no band called Bile Vile...and there isn't one called Nocturnal Descent either (which is my MySpace site name).

BTW: sorry OP didn't mean to HiJack your thread, I know it was started for a reason and this isn't helping

haha....very cool. Are you in one of those bands? I used to represent a band called Screwface, which was hardcore thrash...with the raspy yelling....very interesting stuff.

I actually meant "bile-vial"...as in bile in a small tube....so you can drink it whenever you want....LOL. Your post is making me a sick thinker tonight.

OK so my oil pressure upon start-up is at 5 and then 4~5 when under acceleration or at speed (OK so I do not pay too much attention to it to be honest, just a quick look now and then). At idle is is just above 1. When it is really hot out or I have driven the car hard, then it will be a little less but not much....oh and I run 0W40 which is.....

Owner's manual suggests that 3.5 bar is normal reading at 5000rpm when engine is at normal operating temp.
With 0w40, mine idles at approx 1.5 bar.
