Question Noisy dashboard?

Hey guys.

I have a noisy dashboard and I wonder if anyone have experience this, it sounds like small cracking noise all the time, as soon the car moves.

I saw a thread on the 993 turbo forum that they had similare problem to mine and used some foam stuff, would it be the same fix for my 996?

Mine does this too - If I push on the upper console (horseshoe) it goes away for a while. To lazy to find real cause.

This is actually a great thread. I think you will find the answer if you search for "6420" I'll summarize the info:

As it turns out in most cases -> the noise that appears to be from the dash is actually sound from the windshield moving and creaking. This was a common complaint with the 993. It reappears in some older 996's (mine included). The "6420" is a technical bulletin (Technical Service Bulletin-> TSB) put out by Porsche addressing this problem. TSB 6420 called "Noises in the Wind Shield and Rear Window Area". You can get it TSB's from Renntech. If you haven't joined there, you should, it's a great resource. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...tsbs&code=menu

If you read the TSB, to fix this you need part number 996 541 903 00. One per windshield. It costs $15.00 from pelican parts, or any other parts place (even the dealer). It takes 15 minutes to do it yourself - all all you need is a spatula and a bucket of soapy water.

Now the reason that I said it was a good thread - was because you would never find the right search phrase "6420" without some SERIOUS hunting. Now ask me how I know

-td <-- replaced the gasket and there were no more creaks -> dash, windshield, headliner, or other

not driving a luxo barge - noises are fine so long as it's not mechanical.

I had the same with my '99 - dealer put a little foam around where the gauge cluster attaches to the dashboard and it went away. Didn't even charge me!

No sound is good, but I hardly ever notice it anyway! But for 16 bucks. Bought to order it now!

Good find td - I never hear the creaks and rattles, always have the radio up and the MKI muff mod blaring.

I found that the lower left corner of the passenger side airbag cover was my culprit. The corner is slightly loose and all I do is just push on it, and it's usually good for the rest of the drive.

As TD stated, check with your dealer or Pelican Parts.

I usually spend more than $15 when it involves a spatula and soapy water, so this is a bargin.

It pains me to agree with Ben, but +1.
