Default Painted my calipers today

A few weeks ago I tried to paint my calipers with the dupilcolor system from Pep Boys, which was rated up to 500F I think. It was either the paint or my skill, but that paint job did not survive a track day. The paint started melting at some spots and changed color very quickly. Also, brake fluid would take that paint off easily.

This weekend I tried to paint it with the G2 kit. That paint is rated up to 950F and it has a hardener in the kit. I did not have a chance to take it to the track yet, but I think this system will probably work. After the paint dries and hardens completely, it would not come off upon contact with brake fluid or caliper cleaners. I have a feeling it will hold under track conditions as well. We shall see.

Turned out very nice. What did you do for prepping the surface? Is that a brush on or spray on product?

First time with the duplicolor I just roughed up the surface with a wire brush. When that paint job went to a complete mess after the track day, I had to take everything off, so I used a chemical paint stripper and a metal scraper.

How do you take the calipers off? What part do you not paint when you do this?

I did mine with the G2 kit as well. No problems whatsoever. I did do clear coat after I applied the new porsche emblem on it.

My996A, these kits are meant to be painted on while the caliper is still attached. They provide a cleaner, and the paint/brush to do this. Do a search and you will find some DYI's on this.

Follow these instructions to remove the brake pads. After that, remove the brake line from the caliper using a flare nut wrench (10mm I think?). Do not use a normal wrench because it will probably strip the nut. Then remove the two bolts holding the caliper to the hub. They are 10mm hex bolts. The bleeder screws can be removed with (11mm?) flare nut wrench.

Caliper remove is not essential, but it's definitely a lot more comfortable. My996A, I painted the whole caliper other than the dust shields on the pistons, and the mounting point of the caliper to the hub. I think the color inside the caliper close to the dust shields will deteriorate very quickly, but we shall see.

I thought about clear coating over the G2 paint, but the best high temp clear coat I found was 500F temp from duplicolor. Given my luck with their caliper paint kit, I decided it's probably safer to just replace the decals if they come off.

You should have gone with yellow so that observant porsche-o-philes would think that you have ceramic brakes.

You should spray them with clear if you didn't. It helps the look, the wear and takes out imperfections in your painting

The calipers still look like they did right after I painted them. They are holding up very well.
