Default Does PSE add any power or is it just for sound purposes?

Also, what would this option have cost back in 2003?

It's a $1500 set of cans from Porsche. Best money I ever spent on my 996CAB. Intoxicating sound.

The only place it adds more power is to my right foot! I'm always pressing down harder to make the PSE sing! According to the order guides of the day, the option was $2400 USD back in 2003.

I have always questioned this belief as well. by bypassing 2 chambers with the mk 2 mod are we not decreasing backpressure, effectively lessening the hp dropped/lost within the stock muffler?
Isn't this just a more free flowing (and louder) muffler thus giving us back a couple of the admittedly few horses lost due to the 3 chamber ultra-quiet design?
I vote yes on this one..

Vote all you want, but you are not gaining hp with the PSE.

No one knows because no one dyno's their car.

Really? You don't think PAG dyno tested these exhaust cans? Do you really think they would sell a hp gaining product without stated it would? They could charge MORE for the cans if they stated that.

I don't know, do you know that they dyno'd the exhaust?

Sure they have. But they don't publish that info.

I was told that if the mufflers increased horsepower and Porsche made this assertion to the public, Porsche would have to re-certify the cars with the sport exhaust for emissions issues and DOT (Dept of Transportation).

Porsche did not want to pay for the extra testing so they just claim increased noise.

so pse may well free up some modest power, much as the aftermarket exhausts do (refer to my above logic).. bit surprised no one has put one up on a dyno, though I too do not recall anyone having done so in many years of forum lurking. certainly aftermarket units claims have been verified.
can anyone provide anything conclusive one way or the other?

PAG does not dyno test exhausts. The do sound measurements on them in sound chamber. The actual muffler cans in the PSE are the same as the standard exhaust. The PSE has the same restrictive 3 chamber design. They just patrially bypass with a chamber with some of the exhaust to increase the sound. Hence why Porsche never advertises a HP increase. This is also why the PSE wasn't even part of the X51 option on the 996.

Ruf on the other hand, has dyno tested the PSE and not a single HP increase with the PSE on the Carrera or the Turbo. Just give Hans or Bob at Ruf Autocentre a call. This is a different case with aftermarket exhaust, including Ruf's, with improved designs.

Not much HP can be gained from HP anyway. Maybe 2-3hp realistically. Something that is well within the margin of errors from dynos.

So technically, you gain SOME power but is it noticeable? No. Most factory exhausts out there are very efficient already to get HP which effectively increases their MPG, two things that manufacturers are after.

When I had my S2000, Civic guys would buy stock S2000 exhausts since they were very free-flowing already from factory.
