Default mixing Mobil 1 oil

My C4S is a little low on oil...they put in 15W-50 at the dealer last time I got the oil changed.

I have some 0W-40 in my garage...ok to add?

Are you sure? I was pretty certain you were not supposed to mix viscosities. I could be completely misinformed/under the wrong impression.

Always been my understanding that mixing viscosities was OK. Also understand that if you inadvertently mix conventional with synthetic, it won't cause damage either, although I'd sure be careful not to do it.

Also, I think I read somewhere not to mix different brands. Viscosities ok to mix within brands for topping off. But yes, gota911, oil means it's popcorn time!!

Confucus says: If a drop of 15w50 mixes with 0w40 in the crankcase and nobody was around, would you hear it?

A quarter of the oil stays in when you change it (8-9 of the 12 total liters), so if you change viscosities, you are mixing oils.

You shouldn't mix viscosities and brands as a general rule. It will not cause any damage or concern whatsoever, however, so don't worry about it.
