right front fender, seen when you pull the headlight cluster out. It has an eyelet ring so that you can pull on it. I did not want to pull on it and have the engine drop on me or something. Thought I ask the experts first. I was changing the city light bulb in the headlamp cluster and once removed (headlight), you can see that galvanized looking cable coming from the front. I thought perhaps it was to open the gas tank flap, but the manual says the pull cord is on the right front door frame once the door is opened. Just very curious. BTW its an '01 996 coupe (w/ PSE-best money spent)

Hmm....I haven't seen that one but don't you have to open the hood anyway to get the headlight cluster out? That seems kinda pointless.
Is the pull ring accessible from somewhere else without removing the lights?

Also check
The engine emergency cable release is in under the left taillight. It also must be snagged from underneath to open the engine compartment.
The fuel filler door emergency release is in the front of the passenger door opening.
The front cable release is not supposed to be easy to get at.

Do you guys have any tips on how exactly to get at this from the wheel well?
I went down to my garage to put in my new Optima, and discovered that my car had been broken into (attempted). The passenger side window was all torqued, and now I have a couple of nice creases in the door frame. Needless to say I wasn't real happy.
Anyway, I got bored waiting for the cops to file my police report, so went about replacing my battery. The problem is, I guess in my state of mind this wasn't a great idea because I closed my hood with no battery in the car.
I really need to get in so I can at least get my car alarmed and locked again. Can someone give me quick instructions? What do I need to do, remove the passenger or drivers side wheel well and then what?
Thanks all

Take the left front wheel off.
Pull of the 3 or 4 plastic fasteners holding on the wheel well liner.
Find the emergency release cable under headlight assembly.
Pull the cable sideways to trip the latch.
