How much for Alternator?
Hey, I was wondering how much an alternator replacement should run me at an indy shop? I got a flat tire on the highway, and while idling at service area while waiting for road service I noticed amps just over 10. I turned off car to grab cup of coffee, when I came back car would not start. Waited 10 min, then car started, but I was afraid car would die on way home, so I had car towed back to a shop near my house $220 dollars later.
What a morning!!!!

You have my sympathy - I had a rear flat on I-95 yesterday morning too. It's scarey how the back end is suddenly all over the place
My tires have <1000 miles on them so I was doubly annoyed
I got a replacement at the dealer as I just needed it done asap - normally I would buy my tires from tire rack. In comparison to tire rack and my normal indy fitter I paid $75 extra, which is not as bad as I expected when I called them to find out a price.......

I can think of 2 Boxster owners who had alternator problems. Porsche wants a lot of money, and I don't think they sell rebuilt alternators. Turned out it was the regulator which is a common Bosch part.

If you are handy you may want to remove it and take it to parts place to be tested to see if it is the regulator. And if it is then just replace that part.

I had my alternator replaced about 2 months ago from a shop (German Car Care) and the total cost was about $1500. I honestly thought it was a bunch of crap that they charged me that much, as after the fact I was able to search around and find the part for under $750. The labor cost was only 350 which means they more than made up the money on the part. If you have the time (and a little bit of wrenching skills) you'll save serious money.

Good news and bad news:
The alternator and regulator are fine!!! , But there is a serious draw from the electrical, they think culprit may be a botched K40 alarm install. They are replacing the headlightlight switch, which may be the problem, but they have already spent 4 hours ($400) so far, and no solution.
They won't get a new switch until tomorrow.
