I have a weathershield HD cover that does a good job, when I have overnight projects in the bays. The key I find is to keep debris off the cover before it rains. I use a carduster for this purpose.

how good is the cover as far as the rain is concerned--does it keep the car relatively dry.

It does as well as any cover I've seen, but as with any cover you need to keep debris off of it and make sure there aren't any large wrinkles where water could puddle.

I get car covers from Costco. They are not waterproof, but more water resistant as the fabric allows the cover to breathe. If the cover gets wet, just wipe down your car with a microfiber cloth after the cover dries. The cover is a universal fit, but fits perfectly on my 996. It is a little big on my Carrera 3.2. It's a good deal for $35.

I have 3 car covers and I think custom cover is the way to go. The mirror pocket really holds the cover in place. My universal cover has flown off a few times w high wind.

Weathershield from coverking is pretty good. the noah/evolution4 material is also good and will provide protection against dings.

I don't like the OEM silverguard cover as it's too tight and a little too hard compared to other material.

U can shop on ebay for a used one in good condition. Or just get a new one.

If interested I have an OEM 996 OUTDOOR cover purchased from Performance for around $200...part#PNA.501.996. I used it for a short period indoors only so it is in very good condition and comes with the storage bag and cable lock. $100 + shipping. Send me a PM if interested.

I got the stormproof: http://www.coverking.com/customcarcoversp.html

It feels like a Goretex jacket. Rain just beads off it. It is a thin material so it will not
protect agains dings. For that you'll need an Evolution 4 cover, though they'd probably
take up the whole trunk. On my other cars I use the stuff from Costco, which is "ok",
though it does get soaked after hard rain.

I use a Covercraft Evolution 4 cover for my Volvo V70. Good rain, hail and door ding protection but it does take up some space in the cargo area. I buy my covers from Autoanything

I also have the outdoor OEM cover with lock and it works great! I have not used it much but when I have it has delivered. Minor quibble is that it leaves some fluff on my cab top :>)
