Default Home made intake mod

After looking over the Schnell and Fabspeed cold air intake systems, it seems to me that all they do is block off the resonator box thus changing the intake sound. Are there any inherent problems with simply making those mods yourself by blocking off the resonator tube and eliminating the resonator box from inside of the intake box? Shouldn't this do the same thing, with the exception of the claimed "better flow" of the silicone tube from the aftermarket kit? If all a person wants is more sound, this seems like an inexpensive and logical DIY solution. Am I missing something here?

Ok, I did this mod last night. I simply removed the airbox lid, permanently plugged the neck of the resonator and reinstalled the intake tube. The result is nice roar from about 4500-6000 that sounds superb at WOT. There obviously aren't any performance changes and no sound difference under normal driving conditions. However, if you're tooling along in second gear at 25-30mph and nail the throttle, the sound now matches the accelleration.

Here's where it gets funny. I pull out of my neighborhood onto the main highway and roll through first, second, and into third then coast down to a legal speed. Just as I'm thinking how much meaner the engine sounds, I notice familiar looking headlights in the oncoming lane. Suddenly, a mid-80's guards red 930 passes by with one of the wildest sounding exhausts notes I've ever heard - definitely not stock. Can you say "buzzkill". After that, my car didn't sound do good anymore!

No matter what anyone says about the 996, a hopped up old-school 930 sounds just plain mean! Nothing else comes close.

Nothing beats the sound of the air-cooled Porsche engine, as much as we love H2O

Just forget about the "incident" and try to enjoy the orange cap

My 964 with Fabspeed, no cat and cup cams sounds like a pack of Harley's Even at the local muscle car hang out they get it Best sounding car I have ever owned. Those variable length exhaust tubes really work.

I must agree. My '91 C2 "only" has a cup-style airbox and primary muffler bypass, but sounds MUCH better than my 996 w/Gemballa mufflers. Don't get me wrong, I like both sounds, but like the old air cooled sound the best.

Muffler bypass. That should be loud enough.

On the 964 all six cylinders flow through a single cat. conv. and then two mufflers sequentially. So with the primary muffler bypass, the exhaust still has to go through the cat. conv. and secondary muffler. So while using the primary muffler bypass is throatier and a bit loader than stock, it is not as loud as a 996 with muffler bypass pipes. Of course if you add the secondary muffler bypass into the mix...
