Default 17" Tire size upgrade

I finally get to replace the #@$#$! Rosso's that came with my 996 (besides the horrible wear, I picked up a nail in one). The OEM sizes are 205/50-17 and 255/40-17. Is it worth the speedo offsets to go with something wider/lower on the 17" wheel, and if so, what would be practical?

Didn't quite see this dealt with in the last 9 months of posts, especially with the 17" wheels. I'd appreciate any insight so I can place my order with Tire Rack in the am.

thanks!

that's easy... go with Bridgestone S02-A... I've had two sets on my 17" rims and absolute love them... you just can't go wrong with them...

Thanks, but I'm looking for suggestions on size, rather than brand...

No reason to change size, I second the S0 2As. If you want to go wider go to 18s.

The 968 & 928 in 17 had a 225/45 17 from Factory in the front.

I put a 215/45 on my 17" fronts and with a GT-3 rear swaybar was able to improve the understeering I was experiencing with the stock tire and bar setup. The 215 is a decent fit(pushing things a bit) on the 7" front wheel, a 225 would be not so good.

225/45s fit perfectly on a Porsche 7Jx17 front wheel. Ran them for years. I would recommend the 225 on the fronts with 255/40s on the back with 17 inch wheels.
Ciao,
Adrian.

Now then, if I decided to go with 18's (8" and 10") and an OEM size (225/40 F and 265/35 R ), what would be the proper offset that I should be looking for on my wheels, in order to avoid any problems or spacers?

thanks!

Here's a post from Loren at Renntech about what you can use width and offset-wise. New Wheels and Offset...

P.S. Happily defer to Adrian, but keep in mind the tire manufacturer's measuring width(the wheel width the tire is designed for) for 225's is typically 7.5". The Porsche recommended width is 8" (on 18"s of course). I'm sure the 225 on the 17 is quite practical, I just wouldn't call it ideal.
