PSE Modded 3.6 Mufflers - how close in sound to a real PSE?
#452
OK, i hate to belabor the point. But I want to be sure I have 3.6 cans before proceeding. Here's a photo. What concerns me is that the "cap" that you cut out for the mkII mod is different on mine than the ones i see in this thread. More like a "button" than a "cap" on mine. Are these mufflers still worthy of the mod? Thanks again.

Yes, the "cap" (button) looks a little different but those should be 3.6L mufflers. My guess is that they could be from a 2002 car that was driven in an area with snow in the winter.
Where do you live and where did the mufflers coem from? Just curious.

Thanks tim. I live in NJ but the mufflers came from California. Supposedly with only 34000 miles. I grant you a little hard to believe. But probably they are no worse than what I have ... 125000 miles on my car, approx 70000 on current set of mufflers.
I have no special affinity for these mufflers, but they were the right price. I could wait for another set to come along.

Those are the 3.6L mufflers...but they look like they've been sitting out in the elements for some time. Did these come from a recycling yard? Since they're stainless, they should be ok...but they look pretty rough.

I installed 3.6 cans this past weekend, old cans I took off my car looked just as dark and ugly as those (40,000 miles).

just did this mod on the 3.6L mufflers on my '02 C2 using 2.25" diameter pipes. totally disappointed... it was hardly any louder. would have liked a deeper bassier tone as well. now i'm really tempted to go all the way and do the muffler bypass instead although i'm concerned about the loss in low end torque as i drive a tiptronic. also, it's illegal to run without mufflers in my country, so retaining the mufflers, even as an empty shell, would be useful for the annual inspection, although it shouldn't be too much trouble either to swap the bypass pipes back to stock mufflers just to pass inspection.
i was wondering if there's a middle ground between the PSE hack and the fabspeed bypass? earlier in this thread, there was some talk of doing the Mk-I J-pipe mod, in addition to the Mk-II mod, to achieve an even louder sound? has anyone done this yet?
some options i'm considering at the moment:
1) custom muffler bypass pipes using a smaller diameter pipe than the fabspeed's to provide some back pressure and reduce the noise output somewhat.
2) cutting open the stock muffler, removing the internal baffles and connecting the inlet and outlet pipes directly with a U-shaped stainless steel pipe
3) cutting open the stock muffler, removing the internal baffles, connecting the inlet and outlet pipes with a perforated U-shaped pipe and packing the muffler with sound absorbing wool/fibreglass.
4) adding the Mk-I mod on top of the Mk-II mod i've already done on my 3.6L mufflers.
what would you folks suggest?
thanks

I really like my MK II mod. For whatever reason, mine seemed to get a little louder after about 500 miles after doing the mod.
Do #4. I don't think anyone has done both MK I & MK II mods to a set of mufflers.

I'm too much busy to go to the welding shop.
But I've been to my mechanic's and he was meassuring the 997 Carrera S muflers, to adapt them into my 996 carrera. He told me there's no problem to work properly in a 996.
The could fit with a pair of mods...
Let's see if I'd have enough timeto go to the welding shop with the 997 mufflers and set them in my car with the bypass done
Sorry about this. There are some rennlisters who asked me for PM how it was going...

Joaquin, you're too busy to do a Porsche mod??? Come on man, get a life!! Just kidding!
Thanks for the update. Let us know exactly what mods you mechanic has to make to the 997 mufflers to get them to work with a 996.

I have lot of to do in my job, but the real thing is that my father is ill with a brain tumor and I have to help him. All my free time is not enough to care for him
