Default White smoke on start up

Started my car yesterday(cold start) and white smoke came out the exhaust.

Has never happened before. It didnt happen this morning, but it has me concerned.

Anyone have an idea what causes this?

A little smoke on start up is normal for a "flat" motor. Oil can accumulate in the cylinder walls rather than drain (since the cylinders are horizontal). This oil will burn off when you first start the car which will cause some brief smoke.

My cars only do it occasionally, but it does happen. It is a fairly common question on the board.

Are you sure it is white?

White smoke = coolant or water
Blueish smaoke = oil
Blackish smoke = fuel

Yea it will. Can't tell you when but it will. I happens more often to me at the track after the car has been driven hard, then restarted the next morning at the track. Some times it does it, some times it dosen't. Happens once in a while at home. Everyone I have spoken to, including the dealer, says it is normal. I am not worried about it.

I think it means your car has elected a new pope. Not sure, but I think that's what it means.

Hope that's helpful.

Same here, usually happens at startup afer the last hard run.
Then it goes away at the next startup (or next few days) after driving it for a while without pushing hard.
In fact, I notice mine has more smoke come out of the passenger side exhaust than the driver's side.
Wonder why...?

If I start the car and run it for a very short time, then park it overnight, I get white smoke when I start it the next time. This usually happens if I pull the car out of the garage, wash it, and put it back in. On the other hand if I drive the car around the block after washing and drying it (to blow the water out of the crevices) then there's no white smoke the next day.

Michael,

I wouldnt be to concerned as it does occur, for me its when she sits in my garage for over 4 days. Usually on start up it occurs then next day it will be fine.

I like the Pope theory. I need to look back as I start mine - I've never noticed any smoke, but then again, I'm too busy being enthralled by the sound of the flat-six roaring.

People often say that driving a Porsche is a deeply religious experience, so the pope theory seems to hold up.

In reality the white smoke on start-up is largely ceremonial. Every 911 does this from time to time to celebrate the year that it took to produce them.

Riad gave a good description of the process.

After the festivities a local priest blesses each one on its journey to it's new home, and it's loaded into a giant sheepskin lined case and sent to America for a new start.

I believe this whole process takes about a year for each car... I'm trying to verify this.
