Default Top Speed of the 996 w/X51

Does anyone know? I was asked by a friend and didn't really know the answer.

Per Porsche 180 mph for a narrow body or 177 for a wide body (C4S). A narrow body is rated 2 MPH slower than they rate the 997 Carrera S at 182 mph and 2-3 mph faster than the regular Carrera at 177 or 178. The 996 C4S has a rated top speed of 174 mph. It depends on what source you look at, but Porsche has published the narrow body 996 3.6l at 177 and 178 mph. The primary reason why the 997 C2S is rated higher is not because of the HP, but because of the different gearing.

There are so many variables that woudl effect it... aero kit or not, windows down or not, ride height of car. The X51 should add 2-3 mph in an identical car. I've never had mine over 165, but been there MANY times (on the track... mostly)

The only worthwhile answer is "I've seen 1xx mph on my spedometer", right? jvictor

Ed, What track have you hit 165 on? My car only hits 157 according to the speedometer which is actually 151 according to my data acquisition system at the end of Brainerd's mile long straight. If you're really hitting 165 I'm going back to the drawing board.

BTW, when are you going to race that car?

OK, I can see it on an oval. I hope to be in the 165 neighborhood later this fall at Daytona. I have an X51 as well but obviously I have to run the stock gears in PCA. I'm surprised you can get that much speed with cup gears. You must have your rev limiter turned up a bit.

How do you guys get on the track with the Nascar configuration? Are you doing it with car clubs or through other connections. I'm asking because I've heard of clubs will running NASCAR tracks with a straight and a turn or two with an infield road course, but never the full track.

I'm asking out of ignorance (I'm still relatively new to this), not challenging your statements.

Regarding the top speed, I suspect ED is right that it's little more than 2 or 3 mph. The HP required to overcome aero drag at that speed is huge.

I've never run on an oval. When we do the PCA club race at Daytona it will be on the 24 hour road course version of the track. You do run the oval for a pretty long stretch though. I think we will see the highest speeds ever in club racing. BTW, they are not having a DE and are allowing no rookie racers so they must be somewhat concerned about the speed.

Ed - are you running the Motorsports oil scavenging on your X51?

All of the 3.6l engines have the additional pickup. The X51 adds a baffled oil pan as well.

Jim,
I think I was hitting about 155, confirmed with rpm, not speedo, in my 993 through the trioval at Daytona I really didn't have too much time or nerve to look but it is obvious you are flat out flying, you will see what I mean in a month or so. My guess is your car will easily be at 165 unless there are some wicked head winds, etc.
