Personally, I think the whale tail spoilers from the old days kick the new 75mph lift ups *** any day. I almost think it is just another marketing ploy by Porsche to give the car an ugly smallish electric spoiler to make money on tequipment aero kits.

Those old "Whale Tail" spoilers do give downforce, but keep in mind that wind tunnels and modeling software have drastically improved technology. A 996 Carrera has a .30 drag coefficient versus the .39 of those big spoiler 911's of yore. Todays cars have far lower lift and far improved aerodynamics of those cars of yore. This is not olny from the bodywork, but the underbody too. If there isn't as much lift, you don't need as much downforce; so yes the spoiler doesn't need to be as large to achieve the desired effect. The spoiler only deploys when it is needed to improve stability and reducing drag at lower speeds where it is not needed. Have you noticed that the 996 spoiler deploys at a higher speed than the 964 or 993 spoilers? Why? Improved aerodynamics. The 997 spoiler deploys to a lower height than the 996 for reduced drag and still achieving the desired effect. This does not mean that those big whale tails are good to look.

The real reason for the mechanical up/down spoilers on German cars is because the TUV requires physical protuberances to be covered with soft rubber in order to protect pedestrians (that's why the old whaletail has a black rubber edge - this law came out in '76 when Porsche changed from the ducktail to the whaletail). Since the new spoilers don't stick out when the car's going slow the government doesn't require the ugly rubber edge (when they're up you're going fast and hopefully nowhere near pedestrians). German logic.

Maybe the guy just washed his car and was letting the wing dry out.

I think we need Mythbusters to take a look at that rubber theory.
