Default clean keys

Anyone as stupid as me? I just washed my only key for my 996. I dried it out, put it back together, and when I press the button, the rerd LED lights up. But it does not unlock or lock the doors. Do I need to somehow reprogram it? All help appreciated. Thanks in advance!

you should have at least 2 keys. i'd spend the money and get a spare key any way.

what did you use to clean the grease out of the metal parts of the key?

I just had one of my keys stop working also. The other remote I have works fine, and I have switched out the batteries (they are both only 2 months old), switched the security key, and have tried the trick of putting the battering in upside down to reset and nothing. The light still works on the remote when I push it, it just does not unlock and lock the car and turn on the alarm. any thoughts?

Actually, I think, yes. My keys (I think) got washed when battery was down, and I have since replaced the battery. Suggestions? All other systems seem to be working.

capt601-I've got the same issue. Light still works on remote, just seems to have lost it's remote control capabilities. Anyone else find a fix for this?

jlb532 - have you tried the deal of putting in the battery upside down for 10 seconds to reset the remote? I have heard that working for a few people - Not me though.

****As a response to pl******
Yes I think my key washing did correspond with a battery exchange. Other systems working though, and I entered my radio code and its working. Is there an alarm/locking code that's separate?

Thanks again.

OK...I'm confused by the whole thread. Sounds like you washed your key and it quit working (though not entirely). Also there is the spare key which quit working. It is highly likely you will need to get those keys re-programmed at a stealer. If you don't use your spare key every so often it becomes inoperable. If you got the whole thing wet...well you may need a new key (electronics and water don't mix well). You could try the reset as mentioned above, but I doubt it will work.

wross996tt-
Bought car second hand 3 years ago, without the spare key. Dealer quoted me $400+ for new key. Been doing OK without until now.

As above....."reset didn't work". Since the LED works, may be that my problem has to do with my battery replacement, which coincidently occurred with my key washing. "pl" likely onto something. Still don't know what to do..................really don't want to take to dealer over this.

Doh! I guess I should have posted that here to.

TSB 20/03 9662 Replacing The Key Remote Control Battery (dated 06-25-04) describes how changing the battery "incorrectly" can cause the processor to lock up and stop functioning. If this happens it instructs you to:
QUOTE
1.4 Check the function of the remote control.
Note: If the remote control does not function after replacing the battery, the processor could have stopped. If this is the case, the LED of the remote control either does not light when the button is pressed or it lights continuously, i.e., longer than length of time the button is pressed. The processor must be restarted. In this case, proceed as is described under Step 2.

2. Restarting the processor.
2.1 Remove battery as described under Step 1.2.
2.2 Inserting battery briefly with polarity reversed.
2.2.1 After a waiting time of at least 10 seconds, slide battery with the polarity of the battery reversed (positive terminal downwards) under the tab (Figure 1, arrow 2).
2.2.2 Clip battery downward into the holder.
2.2.3 After a waiting time of approx. 3 seconds, remove this incorrectly polarized battery again.
2.3 Install battery as described under Step 1.3.
2.4 Check the function of the remote control.
