cruising @ 75mph, check engine light started blinking, then the idling went rough and tapping noise from the left engine bay-- turned if off and had it towed..

Loud tapping noise from one side of the engine typically indicates is the hydraulic lifters. Either the oil passage that supplies the oil is clogged or the hydraulic lifter's seal has failed causing it to fail.

Find out what code the computer threw. The tapping you hear may be an electrical snapping causing misfire.

thankyou so much for the rapid replies-- It's in the dealership-- they just asked for me to authorize a diagnostics test-- to drain oil and pull plugs...3 hrs OUCH! It's like waiting for the surgeons report on that grapefruit size tumor they found beside your left ********!!

OIL TUBES CLOGGED-- tubes cleaned, oil changed, lights reset and away we go~~~~

congrats on the good news. Now, to prevent this from ever happening again, you need to start driving the car harder so that the oil tubes have no chance of clogging...

i have the tapping noise its nothing its just the purge valve in the emissons system im not fixing it since i don't care about emissions. it does nothing to the performance and the only side effect is a bad idle sometimes. the purge valve is fine in my car its just doing its job (which is why it sometime does the annoying tapping noise) its just that i have a leak in my emissons system somewhere.
