Question Mass Air flow sensor

Anyone tried to clean their MAF? I got the following error codes P102 and P112 which has to do with the intake air temperature. I figure either the MAF is shot or it is really dirty. I flipped the butterfly and looked down into the throat and it was black (lots of carbon). I sprayed some carb cleaner in their per the instructions on the can and reset my check engine light. It came back on this morning. What's a MAF cost? Any other ideas? TIA

I do not know of anyone that has successfully cleaned an MAF sensor. The part number for your car is: 996 606 123 00

Thanks Loren. The error codes per AutoZone are P0102 VAF input low and P0112 is air intake temperature low. Sound like the MAF? I have a call into the dealer.

Hmmm... my list says:

P0102 - Mass Air Flow Sensor - Below Lower Limit
Check for continuity or short to ground in the wiring harness from the DME.

1 Check wiring from MAF sensor to DME control module for continuity.

1. Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness (DME control module connector).
3. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 17, and MAF sensor connector, pin 5. Display: 0 - 5 Ohms

If infinite Ohms is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.

2 Check wiring from MAF sensor to DME control module for short to ground.

1. Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness (DME control module connector).
3. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 17, and to ground, pin 6. Display: infinite Ohms

If 0 - 5 Ohms is displayed, check wiring for chafing and pinching damage.

3 Check wiring from MAF sensor to DME control module for short to B+.

1. Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness IDME control module connector).
3. Connect voltmeter to special tool 9616, pin 17 (B+), and to ground, pin 6.
4. Switch on the ignition.
5. Display: 0 V

If battery voltage is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.
------------------------------------------------------
P0112 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor - Below Lower Limit
Check temperature sensor in MAF. Check for continuity or short to ground in the wiring harness from the DME.

1 Check temperature sensor in MAF sensor.

1. Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2. Connect ohmmeter to MAF sensor pins 1 and 3. Display: 2.3 - 2.7 kOhms at 20 °C

2 Check wiring from DME control module to temperature sensor for continuity.

1. Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness (DME control module connector).

3 Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 15, and MAF sensor connector, pin 1.
Display: 0 - 5 Ohms.

If infinite Ohms is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.

3 Check wiring from DME control module to temperature sensor for short to ground.
1 Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2 Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness (DME control module connector).
3 Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 15, and to ground, pin 6.
Display: infinite Ohms

If 0 - 5 Ohms is displayed, check wiring for chafing and pinching damage.

4 Check wiring from DME control module to temperature sensor for short to B+.
1 Remove connector of MAF sensor.
2 Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness (DME control module connector).
3 Switch on the ignition.
4 Connect voltmeter to special tool 9616, pin 15 (B+), and to ground, pin 6.
Display: 0 V

If battery voltage is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.

Sorry, sounds like a bad MAF... I've never seen a bad wiring harness.

John,
Question please: other than the check engine light what physical behaviour do you notice in the engine that could make you suspect it's a MAF problem?

First, I want to thank Loren for all the time spent on providing help on not only my issues but all the others as well. I have many times searched the archives and found the answer to my question written by Loren. Thank you.

My symptoms include a rough idle when cold and when I press on the accelerator, it bogs down terribly. This morning it stalled as I was backing out of the garage. After it warms up, it runs like a scalded cat. (New O2 sensors completely fixed the hesitation problem)

I am sure that when I go out to get in it to drive home from work, it will run very rough until it warms up.

Dealer says likely MAF but wants to make sure there are no vacuum leaks on the intake as apparently this will casue the same fault code. If it passes the vacuum check, looks like a new MAF. Get this, the dealer has new MAF's in stock.

Aren't all MAFs' self cleaning? A few seconds after you turn the ignition off the ECU should send a one second burn off signal?
