Post Planning trip to USF law school ideas????

Going to go up there from LA to check out the school and have a million questions for people in that area. Should I drive or fly? I was told that the transit system is great and that parking and worrying about my car will be a pain. Beyond that. I am thinking about going up for a week including a weekend I think. What to do where to go. I was planning on going up with a friend but it looks like that's not going to happen, so I will be going up by myself most probably. Given that fact what is good to do or whatever? Thanks.

SPR:
The area around USF law school is pretty nice and safe, but about 5-6 blocks in a north or south direction can get questionable, but certainly not bad-bad. As you will notice on the map, the USF area is near the "panhandle" of the Golden Gate park, quite a number of homeless people live there so I wouldn't park your 996 there at night. Not that someone would steal it, but a drunk person could lean up against your car or worst vomit on it or scratch it, you know what I mean. If you can rent a garage short term that would be a prudent thing to do. Parking in SF is definitely a pain, the transit system is great.
There are lots of 996 running around SF and none of them has ever mentioned any problems, but make sure you have a front license plate on the bumper, $70 if you don't.
San Francisco nightlife is good, but definitely not as great as LA, SF is too conservative. Great sightseeing tours, great views, fantastic weather (if you like 65-75 degrees throughout the year).
Take your 996 up the Coast Highway 1 from LA to Santa Cruz that will really prove to you the great handling capabilities of your 996, then to the awesome ocean views from Pebble Beach Golf Course. Then straight up to the San Francisco area. When you have time, drive up to the magnificent Napa/Sonoma/Mendocino area to the best wine tasting tour in California. Then check into the Sears Point race course and blast your 996 around the track. Call them for racing schedules.
Then comeback to the San Francisco area at night for a nighttime dinner cruise around the San Francisco Bay. My son is 23 years old, and I know he and his friends go to the weekend evening parties in Downtown SF, if you're interested PM me and I will ask him to PM you with addresses and location.

Hope this has helped. Have fun. Let's keep in touch with each other, my son and I will need some tips from you when he attends med school in LA

Wow that is a great set of advice for my trip. Will do on the pm. Boy, I still can't decide whether or not to drive up or fly though, given how cheap it is to fly, that I will most probably stay in the city, etc. Tough call. I need more input!!!!

Sean,

If your going to be up there for the weekend, there are some definite places you should check out.

It's hard to beat Ruby Skye on Mason Street. This is easily one of the coolest, hippest clubs in the City. The other places that are worth checking out are The Bubble Lounge and the XYZ lounge at the W Hotel (like the one in Westwood). I also have heard that the Redwood Room at the Clift Hotel is cool. The Clift is around the corner from Ruby Skye.

For places to eat there are two places that I highly recommend. If you like Italian seafood then you've got to try MichaleAngelo Cafe on the corner of Union and Columbus. The seafood pasta combo is unbelievable. Then there's Cha Cha Cha, a very hip Cuban restaruant where everything is good.

If you're going up alone, I'd suggest you drive. I don't live in San Francisco but a car can come in very handy and if you need to get to a club or somewhere specific then you can always take a taxi. It's nice to have a car and be able to explore at your leisure. Don't know how old you are but I'm 33 so take that into consideration when it comes to the places I've mentioned. Good luck and let me know if you need any more information!

SPR:
I would drive instead of fly, it will be pretty tough to visit the Napa Valley, Sears Point raceway, Pebble Beach Golf course, etc.
But if you are going to stay strictly in the City of SF then fly and taxis would be the best bet.
Good luck in law school and have fun in Northern California
Redlinerobert:
Great suggestions, we'll check those places out.

Thanks, yeah Sorry I am 25 so that might give you an idea of what I would want to do. I have traveled quite a bit and I enjoy doing things that locals do versus turist stuff for sure. That is ok here and there but it wears thin and I really can't appreciate it, maybe if I had kids or something but not now. Anyone else have ideas? Thanks all.

Bocky, that is the first time I think I have ever heard (seen) the words "conservative" and "San Francisco" in the same sentence. I think of Cincinnati as Conservative (big C was not a typo). San Fran, at least from my Midwestern point of view, is the most liberal city I have ever been to (besides Amsterdam and maybe Toronto).

Why should I get out of the city? And where should I go if so? Out so San Jo? It's tough as my friend just went out there with his gf and drove and said it was great with his new c4s. But that is driving to and fro with someone and knowing him he stayed at a crazy expensive hotel and put the car in a secure place there and took the transit everywhere else. I am going to look at the law school which should take less than a day really. I am more interested in checking out the environment to realize what it would be like if I were to go there and if I want to!! Thanks. More input More!

Be sure to stop by the Mitchell Brothers cabaret, especially after some partying with your buddies.

San francisco is one of the loviest places to be. We have everything here in a vicinity. You want the beach, you have the beach, scenery, etc. You want hot, drive inland about 1 hour, you want cold, go to the bay for a cruise. I just won't take my car downtown as they have lots of construction going on because the weather just cleared up.

Sean,

Regarding USF, I went to that school from 96-99. It is a very good small school, I think if you are into living within a diverse culture, it would be the place. They have many foreign students from all parts of the world, and very little prejudism. For a small school, you will see many nice cars too. My friend a nephew of the sultan of malaysia moved to Malaysia a few years back had a bugatti. I also had a friend who's father was the right hand guy to the saudi king. I liked USF's business school, but for Law locally, I think Mcgeorge in Sac would be a better place for you.

If you want a quick one for relaxation, go to the massage parlor, we have tons of them here too! You chose your pick like its a buffet line.

hahah. Message parlor eh? That's funny It's between usf and southwestern as of right now for me so it's LA where I live now or there hence the need for a trip out there to check it as USF is ranked higher. Then again I can transfer from Southwestern to USC or UCLA or Loyola and that would work out. Thanks. I talked to some more friends and they said they could go july but I can't wait! Maybe I will though, however I doubt they will take the vacation time to make it a decent trip. so....

I used to go to USF (sort of). I mostly just partied in San Francisco (hence, I'm back finishing school now that I'm done partying). I lived right on Oak St. at the Cole St. intersection. Sorry to say, I'm not a good person to mention to the landlord of those apts., or I'd tell you where to go. I got a relatively good deal though. Two bedrooms for $1650 a month. USF is a beautiful place, and I'm sure that if your plan is to study more than party, you'll be fine in S.F. The apartment I had came with garage parking (it was part of a large townhouse, not an apartment building).

The homeless people that live there are fairly reasonable, by the way. Rarely do they really bother "locals". If you see a few of them, tell 'em Matt from Texas says Hiya. They're pretty friendly.

Hi John H:
Thanks for your comments, my meaning of conversative has to do with the younger kids (18-28 years old) having fun in town. LA has much more sparkle and glamour. Honestly speaking SF is great for us--older folks, but it is pretty dead for the younger generation which I feel SPR is part of.
Politically, you are correct, SF is one of the most liberal city.

The only thing I find wrong with SF is the night life here is dead because the cold air comes in from the bay at night and spoils long lines for the clubs.

I go to LA at least every other month for business in the last 3 years and bocky is correct it is a better place for partying. I took my 00 996 to LA when it was brand new no plates back in 2000 for a local shareholders meeting, driving around Beverly Hills people were trying to look into my tinted windows literally thinking I was a celebrity. The turbo wasn't out yet, so having a aero kit 996 was the hot thing then with 19 inch speedline rims, lowered and the whole 9 yards.

My business calls for only 1-2 hours a time but I stay a few days just to enjoy the LA life. If you're only in SF for a few days, you won't get bored although in comparison to LA its boring, there are still many worthwhile attractions here. If worse comes to worse, go to http://www.sf-redbook.com. (I don't mean to offend anyone just giving options to travelers)

It seems the people in LA are more tuned into materialistic things, everytime I'm there around sunset area I can literally count more F360's than Honda Civics. Although the sparkle and glamour is nice for 18-28 year olds, I'm a young family man now so I have to do what's best and raise my kids in a neighborhood that's more down to earth.
