'03 996
I would appreciate any and all input. I went to my dealer today to inquire about trading my '01 996,which I dearly love, for an '03 996,X-51(said he could get it for me),aerokit, sport susp. etc.. My question is this:Tony at TRG in Sonama and Joe at FABSPEED both told me that I could add FAB muffs, heads, intake, and Unichip and get it to 360-370 H.P.Does anyone have any experience with this matter and is this possible? Should I order the factory sport exhaust? Is my dealer lying to me about the X-51(I have the options/price list and it says "available").I can't get any pictures anywhere, including the dealer,of the '03 aerokit. What the heck does it look like? Should I just go buy a low mileage '96 or '97 F****i 355? Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated! thanks-blustem. P.S. No,believe it or not,I don't want a turbo.-Also,my dealer has a brand new black '03 GT2 that he can't sell(has had it for I believe 8 weeks, maybe longer),if any one is interested.

Re the aerokit for 03. I'm guessing that it is the 02 rear wing and 02 flared rockers (which I have on my 02) plus some kind of different nose. Someone posted before that it was going to look something like the GT3 nose, but I guess tht was speculation.

Blustem,
I put those exact mods (except for the airbox) on a 99 996 and the Mustang dyno showed a max increase of 18 hp. That increase only shows up at the very top of the rpm curve, below 5000 it is negligble.
I doubt if the gains on a stock 996 engine would translate directly to the X51 engine however, because it already has improved MAF, headers, and exhaust from the factory. If you get the X51, I doubt there is much else you could do to improve it, maybe the UniChip. I'd suggest doing one or the other but not both.
If you really want 380HP ask your dealer to get on the list for a 2003 GT3. 380HP from the factory and they are supposed to be available this spring or summer.

Howdy,
I'd go with the X51. I also doubt the hp claims you were given, they sound a bit high to me. In addition, I think an X51 will have a higher resell value than a moded car. Here's a photo of the Aero Kit 2.
Good luck
Roy
ps. I like it!

To clarify... the X51 includes modified cylinder heads, different cam shafts, different headers, the GT3 aluminum intake maniflod, remapped ECU as well as the additional center radiator.
All of these help the engine to pump more air/fuel and therefore make more HP. The same mufflers and intake system are retained. Any benefit that can be gained on the standard engine in these areas will most likely be even larger on the X51 as they are now even more limiting than on the stock motor. A unichip tuned specifically for the car would allow you to maximize these changes.
Keep in mind that a gain of 18 RWHP on your 99 translates to probably 23 actual, on 300 hp thats a 8% gain, not too shabby. 8% gain on the X51 would bring you to 372 hp. I am planning on doing the fabspeed mufflers, powerflow intake and a unichip. My expectations, based on past experiences is 380 hp. 380 hp in a 2900 lb car is quite a ride!

I don't know about the 2003 X51 but the version that was available for my car also included new pistons, different valves, the Motorsports oiling upgrade, and a new MAF, in addition to what you mentioned.
The 18 HP included headers, so I can't say what just exhaust would get but based on the results of others, I'd say not much. Also, that 18 HP is only available at the high end of the rpm range, down below that there is very little difference.
I've run with a lot of stock 996s on the track and I can't say that I see any noticeable difference is top speed or acceleration on the track. The car does sound better though.
In any case, it's your money - have at it!

Ed, are you going to keep the stock headers or replace them? Are the stock headers worth a crap? Does the X51 improve your 1/4 mile or your 0-60? Must the stock X51 airbox be modified for max. gains? thanks -blustem

Why not just order a 2003 GT3 (380hp) and will hold its value better.

GrantG, thanks for the reply.I would love a GT3 however I am under the impression that they cost 120-130k(if I'm not mistaken).I,m not quite ready for a 130k car! With my options the car comes in at 95k and I know from previous experience that my dealer should discount the car 4-5k(I always seem to hit them when they are hurting). If I'm wrong about the cost of a GT3 please let me know. Thanks -blustem
