Doug,
You're not dreaming. I also did read it somewhere, but can't find it now. What I remember inolves the use of a hockey puck. It's hard rubber, which is the carved to exactly fit the jack point at one face, and flat on the other face that meets the jack. Seemed like a cool idea.

I'd suggest AJ USA. Go to their site and do a search for jack pad. The part number is
AJR 559 149 02 and they cost $75.95. I have a couple of these and they work quite well, especially if you have the aero kit side skirts.
I also looked at Performance Products because I couldn't remember where I got mine at. However, the picture they show is for the old-style 911 jack that fits into a square tube in the undercarriage. It may be the wrong picture but what they are showing won't work on a 993/996.

Here is mine. It replaces the saddle on my floor jack. Due to the design when the car is raised the jack is "pinned" to the car and the car cannot slide off the jack. Jeff

They call me Mr. Tool Pants b/c I have a few and actually work on cars. Sometimes you need to get them up in the air on a driveway (sometimes with a slope) to work on them. I have 2 floor jacks. You can use a piece of wood or a hockey puck or the other various jack pads I have seen over the years for the 986/996 - but I will not get under your car w/o a jack stand or a wheel under there.
Then I saw a jack saddle/cup plate that made sense a few months ago and contacted Paul Wilding and bought it. That is what the pics are of. He is a Porsche owner and makes tools. The pin size is 1 3/16" but not all jacks have the same size - but he will make it to your order.
