Arrow OBC hack for 996

For those of you that didn't know, if your 996 came without the factory On-Board-Computer, it's in there, you just have to get it turned on. This is done by a Porsche OBD II computer at a dealer. That being said, I have seen a number of sites by Boxster owners explaining how to install a rocker switch in one of the dummy holes on the dash to control the computer.

I was wondering if any of you had done this to your 996? Is it different than for the Boxster, or pretty much the same? I'm going to attempt it, but am leary because my instructions are for Boxster.

I did this to my 1999 996. I used the exact directions and parts listed on the Boxster board hack. It works wonderfully.....

Talking

I just finished the obc hack this afternoon, it was quite easy. It works perfectly as described in this link:

<a href="http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/obc/" target="_blank">http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/obc/</a>

All it cost me in materials was about $40 + whatever the dealer charges you to turn on your obc (in my case I went strait to the shop and and asked a mechanic to do it, about 10 seconds later, bingo, I slid him a 20).

$60 bucks for what was a $300 option!

Question

Is there any reason to think this won't work on an 01 996?

I have a '99 996 and the temp is always displayed. I do not have the OBC option. Could I assume that someone has enabled it since the temp is shown or does everyone else's do this also?

From everything I've read, that be a good guess. Why not wire up the switch and see?

Kerry,

If the temperature is displayed then your OBC is turned on. TO get the other features you will need to wire up a switch or add the 4th stalk.

Thumbs up

The temp was the first thing I saw when they turn on my OBC.

I have done the retrofit about 25 times for our local Boxster group, mostly with the stalk. The instructions on that site were prepared by Peter Smith, PCA tech advisor and shop manager at my local dealer. He gave the instructions to me and I gave a copy to Yoseif and that is what is on his site. The pictures on the site of the install with the stalk are pictures of me working on Bruce's car, and a few weeks later it was done on a 996.

The only difference b/w a 996 and a Boxster is the year involved. The Boxster got the new style cluster in 2001, but for the 996 it was 2002. The change in the wiring are noted on the instructions. If any of you 996 San Jose area owners want to do it, let me know, and I will give you a hand.
