LanceK -- Not sure how far you are from Manhattan, but a tour of the Rolex maintenace facilities there on Fifth Avenue is a great experience if you are a Rolex freak like we are all Porsche Freaks. If interested , let me know.

Tell you what, I have a Timex. Keeps perfect time and I'm not sure anyone really notices as I scoot past!!!
Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm in a strange mood this evening. I actually have a bunch of watches (including a Timex) but none are nearly as fancy as the ones mentioned unfortunately.

Chris, Rolex has a recently added service center in Beverly Hills. I would look into whether it's cheaper to use the Dallas one due to sales tax, but I doubt it. The guy who runs Dallas service is quality, I knew him when he was watchmaker for my friends' stores.
I know there are still qualified guys around, but Rolex no longer permits service by dealers at all. Too much trouble with inconsistent service and especially parts finding their way to counterfeiters in Asia--they freaked when the solid gold fakes started showing up, one reason it has become relatively difficult to switch dials in recent times.
Shortshift, that is a truly excellent story. Which carrier?

okay, since there are so many watch connoisseurs here, I was thinking of buying a Tag Heuer Monza Chronograph because of its "racing heritage" and because it appeals to me. What are your opinions on this choice,
and dont' hold back because I haven't spent the bucks yet!

Fluke996--Instead of their CARRERA model?!
Heuer is a nice solid watch, rugged, decent value, about level with Omega. Should be available around $1500 or so new if you shop it, I think.
No matter what it says on the case in terms of water resistance, don't push those chrono buttons under water.

Nick, Rolex does allow not only Rolex dealers, but qualified independent watchmakers to service their watches. (In order to be able to buy parts from Rolex they make sure you have the equipment, talent, and wherewithal to repair them.)
Don't mistake me, this doesn't mean your independent watchmaker can do warranty repairs-just that there are watchmakers out there that Rolex will sell parts to.

Regarding maintenance, I would recommend using a auto winder for the nicer automatic timepieces. I wear an Omega daily and keep an IWC in a winder. Keeps the mechanism moving regularly, doesn't allow the oil inside to sit for extended periods of time without moving and keeps the watch wound properly.
Btw, there was a very long post recently in the "Off Topic" section of the Board regarding watches. Quite interesting with some nice pics.

So many watch lovers here I might as ask one of you guys.
When I bought my set of Rolex for me and the wife, the store manager tells me that all rolex should be sent back to the factory for a "cleaning and conditioning"every 2-3 years. have any of you ever heard of that? Since my wife's watch contiou to run a couple of minutes slow every couple of weeks I am seriously thinking about forking out the couple of hundred bucks to have the Rolex factory look at it.
Next, I love my Breitling Navitimer Olympus more then any Rolex I've seen.
