996 Unique Colors

The dealer showed me the color sample of it in the brochure and I could see why no one ever ordered it, it looked butt ugly there but was nice in person. We always called it Love It or Hate It Green (because it really polarized people), Porsche calls it Wimbledon Green. One day a guy with a 993 walked across a parking lot to tell me how much he loved the color, asked me what the color is called and then told me I was full of crap when I said Wimbledon, he even argued with me for awhile...

Silver is not the German racing colour, White is. The myth of silver being Germany's racing colour came from the time Mercedes stripped their cars down to bare metal and polished them. However they were actually bending the rules.
If you look at any of the colour pictures of the Porsche factory team cars (as opposed to the "works" teams like Gulf and the original Martini-Porsche team), their base colour is always white.
Another titbit is that action by Mercedes gave rise to the saying "body-in-white", which actually means bare-metal. If you see in the Porsche parts catalogue the saying "body-in-white" it means the part will be delivered in bare metal.

Adrian.
