Am I just an idiot about shifting from 2nd to 3rd, you can be honest. When driving in my 2001 996(has 12,000 miles), it grinds most times when shifting above 6,000 RPM. Is it just me or do I just use this gear wrong. I never ever experience it in any other gear. Would it be possible that I just don't depress the clutch all the way in this one gear shift only?

Sounds like a worn syncro, as long as your technique is right. I've heard of a few of these on 996s, particularly the 1,2, &3 gear syncros. Should be a warranty claim.

Funny, I have the same car, even the same color.
The same thing happened to me at NHIS last month.
Looks like when the hydraulic fluid (Brake) gets hot, Its a problem to shift up to 3rd(at least I hope thats the problem). I changed the fluid to ATE Blue and next week at Wakins Glen I'll see if it worked? Syncros won't let you downshift, but usually you can upshift, that's why I think its the fluid.

That's really weird... I think we may have identified a common problem. I was at the track this weekend for a 2-day PCA DE event, with my son and I both driving my '99 996 cab. Halfway through the second day, we both noticed that we couldn't do high-rev 2nd to 3rd shifts anymore.
I mentioned this to another driver who has the same car, but 2000 model, and he said "yeah, mine does that too, the only way around it is to double clutch". I tried that, but it was so unnatural to me that I finally just wound up keeping the car in 3rd for the short stretch where I wanted to use 2nd gear.
I have the ATE Blue fluid in the car, but I think it's only in the brake lines. Or do they share a common reservoir? If so, then that's not the problem.

Do you guys have any short shift installs on your cars because prior to my B&M I noticed had difficulty engaging from 2nd to 3rd but after the B&M it's pretty effortless. I always thought the stock shifter is a bit long so may not be conducive to fast clutching. Just my 2 cents worth. Regards. Mike

I was looking into installing the short shifter but thats all I need to go to the dealer and have him blame the problem on that. I am going to take it in soon and have them look at it along with repairing my broken console hinge.

Bought the car in and they had to wait a few days for the rep to come drive it. He finally did and sure enough, I am having a new tranny put in next week. If anybody has a constant problem like this, definitely bring it in while your cars are under warranty!!!
