Post track days....

How do you guys find the track days at your local track other then pca and porsche owners club? Any other ways of finding more?

I am a new porsche owner and would love to participate in more track events to improve my driving and just have fun. If Anybody in Los Angeles area can tell me more about track events here I would really appreciated.

While I haven't attended an event yet, I hear that the PCA is pretty good, although some people have told me they are somewhat disorganized.

Most techs and Porsche racing teams I know dislike the POC very much. Apparently they have a rep for being the Pompous Onerous Crybabies. But I have not 1st hand experience with that.

Anyhoo -

For a regimented club with rules and schedules and the like, try the HPDE events at NASA. www.nasaproracing.com

For a more relaxed "go at your own pace" experience, try Alltime Racing. The events are more expensive, but you get the entire track for a day and it's limited to only 20 rich people driving their toys around.

Finally, Buttonwillow has Test & Tune days on most Fridays. Call them before heading up, and make sure that street cars are allowed that day.

With respect to tracks in the L.A. area:

Willow Springs is the "Fastest Road in the West". I hit about 135 my very first time on the track, and I understand more experienced drivers can get up to 160+! What a feeling.

Buttonwillow has more twisties and is more technical, and therefore slower. It has its place though.

Irwindale Speedway: While street cars are almost never allowed on the main oval track, they do have 1/8 mile drag racing once a week. IMHO, 1/8 mile is too short a distance to have any fun.

California Speedway: Again, street cars are almost never allowed on the main track unless it is for a special event (such as festival of speed sponsored by PCA).

I have done 50 track days, none PCA events. By the time I get the notice from PCA, and respond, they are "full".

Do an internet search, there is a lot of well run events out there, Panoz, tracquest, chin, and many others.

Join. It's worthwhile just to get the discounts and the magazine (Panorama), not to mention all the other benefits. I cannot see a downside, apart from giving up a meager $42.
