Unhappy Rattle from engine area at startup

This afternoon, as I started my '01 996 after it sat for about 30 minutes, there was a terribly loud rattle from the engine area. It sounded like somebody was shaking a bunch of ball bearings inside of a metal box. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> I immediately shut the engine off and the rattle went away. I restarted the engine and it started rattling again. Instead of shutting it off, I gave it a little gas to bring the revs to about 2K RPM and the rattle went away. On the drive home, the engine ran perfectly with no abnormal noises. Anybody have any idea what this rattle could be? Could it be something in the induction system or could it be something in the valve train?

Do you mean a cadence like shaking a can of spray paint, or like diesel clatter? Probably noisy hydraulic valve lifters, very common for some oil to drain out of them with the engine off for a while. Should stop at idle within a minute or two on a cold start, less time with warm oil such as you describe.

If that is what it is, it is not harmful or a symptom of distress, not unusual in these cars once the motor fully loosens up at 10K or so. Unfortunately it cannot be remedied either, you can ask but Porsche is not going to get you a new motor for that.

Just noticed you wrote "terribly loud." Noisy lifters would be more like "very noticeable." Hope that is all it is.

I would have it towed in to be safe. Any type of loud rattle from an engine is never a good thing.

Better safe than sorry.

I agree with Sloth, besides which being towed in pops you close to the head of the line, I think they have to begin work within 24 hours.

Good time to get anything else pending done.

I had a rattling upon startup that had bicycle bell sound to it. It turned out to be the timing chain rattling around because the timing chain retension pin had broken off. PCNA replaced it with new engine.

If it sounds wrong, stop the engine and get the car to a dealer via flatbed towtruck.

My '99 C2 has a loud metalic rattle when it first starts in the morning. Sounds like something is loose with, or in, the exhaust. Only happens when cold and has always happened...weird but doesn't seem to be a problem. (I've put 25,000 miles on it.)

Very old thread!!

But take it to the shop ASAP and don't start it again! Didn't you just buy the car also? Was it a private sale or dealer?

I have driven it about 1,000 miles since i purchased it. Nothing exciting came out of the PPI other than the A/C unit. The PPI was done by an indy who works on nothing but Porsche's. I started the car up, lowered the top, sat for about a minute in the garage, drove it about a 1,000 yards and no problems, than all of a sudden i heard the loud rattle (like marbles in a tin can) coming from the back of the car. I stopped the car and the noise then immediately stooped. I ooked underneath the car and in the engine and saw nothing. I got back in the car and went on my way and immediately heard the noise again and once again, stopped the car, got out and looked around for something in the street maybe and nothing. Being only a 1,000 yards or so from the house, i turned around to go back home and the noise was gone so i went back on my way to the gym and drove for about 15 more minutes and nothing, no noise or anything. After about an hour at the gym, i started it up, came home and no noise at all. Very weird. I was planning on getting the IMS done this winter but now i am scared to drive it. thoughts....

I would do it asap and not this winter. Also, tow it there for safe measures! Seriously I would!

Because the noise went away, it might not be IMS though... Get it checked out for sure!

WOW ...from the dark ages... when time was forgotten ... there were mysterious rattles.

Now, through the advances of Jake's brain.

We know that the IMS likes to rattle when it is mad!

Of course, we also know that chains, lifters, and all sorts of other stuff can rattle too.

if from the very back of the engine bay, could be your cats. also the muffler baffles welds often fail. as stated above, get it checked.

See this thread and watch / listen to the video - if yours sounded like that it's IMS...
