Default Radar Detector?

Well after long research, I have decided I will purchase the Valentine One. Should order it soon. Can anyone tell me if MI uses POP technology? Thanks!

Well the UPS truck delivered my V1. I am excited. Now just need to learn the sounds and bogeys in my routes. Any tips? I noticed it picks up alot of X-band. It did pick up a state trooper using K-band about 50yds or more before I saw him.

I don't have the V1 but I assume it works like my SRX, you can actually shut x-band off. If you live in a very rural area some local cops may still use x-band but in NY I don't recall seeing any x-band that wasn't a security system.

You can turn x band off. Ka is deet-deet. and K is kind of a brap. Laser is deedle deedle and most of the time you're busted. (I've been lucky and got a few bounces off someone else). laser deedle is also taillights of those stupid GM midsize SUV's. They say POP makes a popping noise but they don't have it in OR.

About 4 years ago I was coming home from NY via the Jersey Turnpike and a couple of State Troopers were using X band. The funny thing is on my Passport 8500 I changed the setting to barely pick up X band. Fortunately, I was warned in enough time to blend into traffic.

I keep mine on the city mode to eliminate most x-band but I really haven't noticed any police using it in recent memory - better to have a few false alarms then to get pulled over.

The SRX gives a false laser reading off of GM taillights too, WTF?

mdillian3690,
you've made one of the best purchases of your life. Learning to use the V1 takes some time. At first you are all jumpy over the slightest warining but over time you become a V1 jedi and the arrows are your saber. The long stretches of miles with just the benign "L" illuminated greatly improve the driving experience. No more constantly checking my mirrors for that phantom Five O.

One tip: be careful with passengers who don't stop yapping. I ignored a warning and pop it was a local cop in a supermarket parking lot (I wonder if he knew the automatic doors my veil his ****ty radar gun).
Well I got clocked doing 50 in a 25 but he let me slide (he looked about my age) so I lucked out.

btw, I picked the New Jersey State Troopers using both Lazer and K.

Oh, is that what that is damn GM tailights, I also get falses from Ambulances too?

This week I plan on taking a drive down to Atlanta to visit my brother however as I drove around DC this past weekend I noticed my K40 was acting up. I think I'm just going to purchase the X50 Passport for the ride down and back then consider whether or not I will keep it for my SUV to replace my regular Passport 8500.

Also, when I get home I have to decide which "remote" radar detector I'm willing to "plunk" down $1500 on (Bel/Escort/K40) for the 996.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. Perfectlap, you're right, at the first beep I was like jumpy and looking to see what direction the signal was coming from. In your experiences, what would you guys say, an average heads up you have received before seeing the cops? for example in yards?

Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with the ancedotals. www.speedzones.com a 100% legit and unbiased radar testers, unlike other sites.

Those tests are done in one part of the country, usually where there isn't much cover from Trees, Builidings etc, in order to see the maximum range of the detectors. Your part of the world might be very different or very similar. Here in NJ/NYC area we are densely populated and from the highway I'll often pick up shopping mall automatic doors away from strip malls a mile from the highway. This is one reason some don't like the V1, too sensitive, picks up everything. But you can set your V1 to just pick up Lazer, Ka and K, Pop (still have yet to hear someone picking this up 'round here).

funny thing is that my friend's father shot me a disapproving look when he saw my V1 but little does he know that since putting it in I tend to drive within the speed limit more often now. Its not really so much a question as being able to go beyond the speed limit but knowing when your being watched.

Something on new Infiniti's sets off the V1 laser warning, too, especially the big Infiniti SUV's. I'm guessing it's either their park distance control or some kind of automatic lane speed control. Either way my V1 laser alert seems to be getting more of a workout these days, and it never seems to be the po-po.
